Ramadhan Mubarak!

bsmlhrhmnrhm

it's that time again... a time of spiritual uplift, transformation, and focus. a time of more intense study and putting away of things which might hinder you. nearly my favourite part of the year! it was my intent last year to memorize the asma ul-husna [the most beautiful names], but i didn't. thus, i will try to do it this year, as well as memorize 2 more surat of the Qur'an. pray with me as i pray for you.

luckily if you're on your rag, you get to take a week off from fasting
as rude as the idea is, i don't mind
better for us i suppose

but i was thinking about fasting for a few days.. get a little bit out of the whole experience

why not live the whole year with "spiritual uplift, transformation, and focus"?

i like raman, but not so big on the idea of ramadhan..especially since i like to eat!

Re: Ramadhan Mubarak!

@peach punch- yea, you need all the sustenance you can get during that time. it would be unjust to ask you to forego eating then. but you do have to make it up another time.

give it a shot if you feel up to it. just go into it with the right mindset, not thinking negatively about not eating- really, as much as possible, not thinking about not eating. you'd be surprised how much time opens up, and how alert you are, and how little you'll miss the mass quantities of vittles during the day.

@dirt mcgurt- primitive? see: modern medical opinion on periodic fasting. i b'lieve there are links on the thread from last year. ["eid mubarak"]

@kattoo- i indeed try. i look at ramadhan like a sprint near the end of a distance race, doing what you're doing already- just in earnest.

didn't think i would see any muslims here. i mean, someone that deep into these things. my ancestors were muslims, but we haven't been practicing for few generations.

btw, i like how you typed arabic. never seen this style before.

haha, the whole reason for the country of Bangladesh is that they were muslims. what, if anything, do you practice now?

and thanks, it works rather well. it actually helps me remember the arabic alphabet.

Re: Ramadhan Mubarak!

the reason for pakistan is that they were muslims, reason for bangladesh is that we speak bangla.

i have been through both the blind-believer and atheist phase. now i just sit back and listen to things. islam here has become more of a fashion these days. it is alarming because it seems that they are thinking less. i fall into the category that question things. not an atheist btw.

Re: Ramadhan Mubarak!

i'm sorry; didn't mean to misspeak.

i was a blind believer in pauline christianity, then i came to something that [in my study/understanding] encourages excerise of mental faculties, not willful ignorance. i take qur'an as the only source of revealed knowledge that was given to prophet muhammed, not sunna and hadith. i'd rather go with the thing everyone agrees on than with that which is disputed. at-tawasuf has called to me in different forms my whole life. i try, i seek the heart-mind-face of God in every way i know how.

Re: Ramadhan Mubarak!

I think ramadan living in a muslim country's sort of made me feel like this whole thing's about proving to everyone what a good muslim you are rather than learning from the experience. So many people are going "OMG you aren't fasting! shoo hada ya5i! what is this?" and then the next day "yeah im fasting now" with a hint of "am i a good muslim now?"

In dubai, us foreigners are not allowed to eat, listen to music in public(or have it play real loud inside your car or house), or watch TV with our windows open(if you live in a house where your TV's shown to everyone outside).

WHY?

What's the point doing that? Isn't the point of ramadan to teach you how to appreciate what you have and how to be able to not give into temptation, etc, etc?

They just control all the factors that would make them break their fast or whatever, and i'm sorry, but that to me is CHEATING.

Just the other day there was a huge issue in the papers because a child was eating biscuits in a supermarket and the person behind the counter(a muslim) made an issue because that little child had tempted him/her. Check the letters to the editor and you've got the funniest complaints ever.

"I put the radio on and they were playing music before iftaar".

WHY THE **** DID YOU EVEN PUT THE RADIO ON IN THE FIRST PLACE!?

then there's people complaining about the TV, and how people kiss on the TV and it arouses them and take their mind off allah. I'm sorry, but **** you. **** you and your stupid complaints. I don't understand their mentality.

if YOU know that YOU want to do this or that, then do it, don't go LOOKING for something to throw you off so you can ***** and moan about it.

Cant eat?

Dont go near the food court.

Cant listen to music?

Dont turn on your ****ing radio

Can't watch kissing without getting raging hardon?

**** man, you've got a problem to begin with, and Stop watching TV then.

It really is that simple, but they make it seem like this whole thing's so hard and that we should all feel sorry for them and be sensitive because they're being so religious.

Another thing I dont understand is how when they're fasting, they're all so ****ing sensitive. They come up to you and say such swak things, and can be so rude and **** and in the midst of all of this they add "I'm fasting unlike you". Later on in the evening, they go "listen I'm sorry about today...I was fasting".

What the ****? Being hungry is an excuse to get away for being an insensitive stretched out asshole? Not just with things they say. They drive like ****. I'm not even joking, I am afraid to drive on the roads around 6pm during ramadan. They drive like ****, they're aggressive and **** it is so annoying because there's always an accident and there's always traffic and you're surrounded with a bunch of hungry muslims waiting to go home and stuff their faces who can't understand that flashing their lights and hooting unnecessarily will NOT make the traffic magically disappear.

And another thing. WHY do they need a month to learn all this ****? Why can't they make a conscious effort to do it in their own time without the moon telling them to. They're such hypocrites. For the whole year, they do **** which would make you wonder if they're muslim..****, you begin to wonder if they're even a religious person. But then the month comes and all day they're praying and being 'good' muslims and after iftaar it's back to normal. They also fast all day only to stuff their faces in the end. It's like they miss a few meals and make up for it. I always thought ramadan was a time where you learn to appreciate what you have by making you understand what its like to be poor or whatever(there's more to it than that though, I am aware)

It really really ****ing irritates me. Please note, not ALL muslims do this. There are a whole bunch though, honestly I think there are more hypocrites then there are true honest muslims, at least here in dubai.

I do not hate muslims or anything, and I dont mean to disrespect their religion or anything, even though it might come off that way. Just letting ya'll know.
