I think ramadan living in a muslim country's sort of made me feel like this whole thing's about proving to everyone what a good muslim you are rather than learning from the experience. So many people are going "OMG you aren't fasting! shoo hada ya5i! what is this?" and then the next day "yeah im fasting now" with a hint of "am i a good muslim now?"

In dubai, us foreigners are not allowed to eat, listen to music in public(or have it play real loud inside your car or house), or watch TV with our windows open(if you live in a house where your TV's shown to everyone outside).

WHY?

What's the point doing that? Isn't the point of ramadan to teach you how to appreciate what you have and how to be able to not give into temptation, etc, etc?

They just control all the factors that would make them break their fast or whatever, and i'm sorry, but that to me is CHEATING.

Just the other day there was a huge issue in the papers because a child was eating biscuits in a supermarket and the person behind the counter(a muslim) made an issue because that little child had tempted him/her. Check the letters to the editor and you've got the funniest complaints ever.

"I put the radio on and they were playing music before iftaar".

WHY THE **** DID YOU EVEN PUT THE RADIO ON IN THE FIRST PLACE!?

then there's people complaining about the TV, and how people kiss on the TV and it arouses them and take their mind off allah. I'm sorry, but **** you. **** you and your stupid complaints. I don't understand their mentality.

if YOU know that YOU want to do this or that, then do it, don't go LOOKING for something to throw you off so you can ***** and moan about it.

Cant eat?

Dont go near the food court.

Cant listen to music?

Dont turn on your ****ing radio

Can't watch kissing without getting raging hardon?

**** man, you've got a problem to begin with, and Stop watching TV then.

It really is that simple, but they make it seem like this whole thing's so hard and that we should all feel sorry for them and be sensitive because they're being so religious.

Another thing I dont understand is how when they're fasting, they're all so ****ing sensitive. They come up to you and say such swak things, and can be so rude and **** and in the midst of all of this they add "I'm fasting unlike you". Later on in the evening, they go "listen I'm sorry about today...I was fasting".

What the ****? Being hungry is an excuse to get away for being an insensitive stretched out asshole? Not just with things they say. They drive like ****. I'm not even joking, I am afraid to drive on the roads around 6pm during ramadan. They drive like ****, they're aggressive and **** it is so annoying because there's always an accident and there's always traffic and you're surrounded with a bunch of hungry muslims waiting to go home and stuff their faces who can't understand that flashing their lights and hooting unnecessarily will NOT make the traffic magically disappear.

And another thing. WHY do they need a month to learn all this ****? Why can't they make a conscious effort to do it in their own time without the moon telling them to. They're such hypocrites. For the whole year, they do **** which would make you wonder if they're muslim..****, you begin to wonder if they're even a religious person. But then the month comes and all day they're praying and being 'good' muslims and after iftaar it's back to normal. They also fast all day only to stuff their faces in the end. It's like they miss a few meals and make up for it. I always thought ramadan was a time where you learn to appreciate what you have by making you understand what its like to be poor or whatever(there's more to it than that though, I am aware)

It really really ****ing irritates me. Please note, not ALL muslims do this. There are a whole bunch though, honestly I think there are more hypocrites then there are true honest muslims, at least here in dubai.

I do not hate muslims or anything, and I dont mean to disrespect their religion or anything, even though it might come off that way. Just letting ya'll know.

Re: Ramadhan Mubarak!

munki- yea, it's the basmalah

as far as your larger post, i'm sorry you've been jaded. there are alot of people who observe ramadhan just because that's what you do in the ninth month and it's used to show offblahblahblah, but i take it as a chance to reaffirm my commitment. it's like bootcamp in prep for the rest of the year. also, it is about commiserating with the less fortunate and not at all about grandstanding. you're not even really supposed to talk about your fast unless someone pushes the issue of why you're not eating/etc or it comes up in pertinent conversation.

Re: Ramadhan Mubarak!

man yellow, if you're doing this ramadan thing bru, Much respect and stuff. It's probably hard not eating and swearing and thinking all sorts of weird ****. But yeah, it had nothing to do with you my man. Hope you didn't take that **** personal, because it wasn't what I was aiming for.

It's not that I have a problem with ramadan. I'm 100% certain that there actually are muslims that do it out of faith or whatever, the one' I've observed(majority of dubai) is what irritates me. I wouldn't really give a **** quite honestly, but they ask us to be respectful of them, when I've got my life to live and they're not respecting me by giving me the freedom that's mine because they decide to go super muslim on us all of a sudden, when the reality is that it's all just for show. It's all a facade.

Just yesterday there was a huge deal because a radio guy said something about bacon on the radio in the morning. There's a petition going on to get the dude fired. Why? Hearing the word bacon ****s it up for you? I do not understand these people. It's so unfair to him because his comment was innocent(I've actually met the dude and he's a really chill guy). Lame.

Re: Ramadhan Mubarak!

no, no offense taken. and i'm totally there with you as far as those wolves in sheep's clothing; they just ain't right.

for me, and it may be for some of the people you're dealing with, ramadhan is a time to make amends for things i've done in the rest of the year and a press myself not to do it again. sometimes, though, it's like new year's resolutions. so you just try the best you know how.

it's also about fundamentally changing the way you operate for a month. i LOVE to eat, i mean LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE to eat. so to turn down my plate and glass all day, then do 8 extra ra'ka of prayer [hopefully going through the entire qur'an in a month], then to try to cut out the other bad actions and influences in my life... yeeeeeeeeesh. but i do it, because i really love and seek to please God.

if god is so great, why would he care whether or not you believe in him.

Re: Ramadhan Mubarak!

emoticon I remember asking myself that on the school bus once and getting deep into thought about the universe and wtf god was doing before he created the world and ****. Like we all know there was a huge war in eaven or whatever which started the whole good and evil thing.

Also sometimes I wonder why god and satan just don't sit there and sort their **** out. It's been more than a billion years now. Doesn't satan get bored of trying to lure us to the dark side? Doesn't it seem like god's playing the sims or something, and if it were the case, wouldn't he too get bored after a while? I mean we were made in his image and **** so they say, so I'm sure god's gets bored otherwise why would we have that in us. What about the animals? There's a lot more of them combined than us, why are we the only ones who get to go to heaven. It's it a waste of god's powers when they all die?

Sometimes I think this whole god thing was written by some people who'd eaten some mushies or something. According to www.cracked.com, the mountain where the 10 commandments were first laid out is littered with Psilocybin mushrooms emoticon.

But thats what I'd think on my ride to school when I was a kid. I still wonder these things to date sometimes.

Re: Ramadhan Mubarak!

I never REALLY believed in god enough that questioning (his) existence would shake me to the core. Even as a child I thought of him more as a magic wishing fountain who would reward me if I didn't wail on my sister. Although I was catholic I also never believed that Jesus was the son of god- not once. I said the words in Sunday school and made communion but thats about it.
