if the meaning of the stories includes things like killing your child if it sees you drunk etc then i think the validity should be questioned.

Re: What is your first thought when...

well thats just one of the many bits in the bible but as jesus was (well hypothetically perhaps) a jew, it meant he believed they were holy.

i think to qualify as a christian or muslim or what ever then you have to subscribe to the statements assigned to that faith.
e.g. believe that the gospel/quran is infallable or absolutely true(or atleast the first version of it written).

if you're just using a text to cherry pick what you like then you're not learning from it, you're just taking the bits you already agree with and therefore end up with where you started.
I mean if you disregard any homophobic or gender discrimination rules laid out because you think theyre wrong but think turning the other cheek is a good thing, you're just cutting the text into the shape of what your beliefs already were.

I guess what I'm saying is I don't think you can really be a follower of a religion if you're attitude to it is "its always right... except for when its not. So i believe in it and follow it.

i just read through what i wrote and i can see people jumping on the "assigned" bit. The most common discussions(arguments) i see happening that have no value of winning are the ones where the real thing they disagree on is actually the meaning of a word used and don't even realise it. A lot of these discussions go no where unless you realise it all comes down to etymology, which is ultimately trivial and arbitrary. Im in a bit of a rambling mood so i'll try and stop spamming the thread.
my point is with out a consensus on what the term refers to, then you can't really make any judgements unless the item presented for judgement is done so with a specific elaboration about which meaning they want inferred from the use.

I agree with Ghandi. And I don't really care whether or not jesus existed outside parable.

I think argument about existence is a waste of precious time when the real point should be:

what is the meaning of these stories?

I find modern christianity to be very unchristian.

I agree. The bible has SOME good moral teachings in and it is interesting to see that many morals and laws we hold today date at least back to the bible and other religious texts. But then we also have to move with the times and realise there's a lot of stuff in there which doesn't go with today's world.

However as Sir Cheshire said, if you subscribe to a particular faith surely you should follow all the rules held in that faith. So to be Christian in today's world is kind of ****ed up?

didn't watch the video but I've seen Dan Savage on Bill Maher lots of times. He is a smart dude but I never understand why people would make their life about their sexuality. I suppose its an issue of rights but aside from some legal obstacles (that will eventually dissolve) I think gay people are pretty much as accepted as they are going to be.

-my opinion
