DANDRUFF VS. BUILD-UP [massage recipe & Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) rinsing]

If you are dreading up and you find that you have flakes forming on your scalp, it is more than likely that you are experiencing a natural wax build-up on your scalp and not experiencing dandruff.

If you have dandruff, you will find that your scalp has sores and patches of dried skin that bleed. If this is the case, you scalp will need to be conditioned.

You can condition your scalp with a simple blend of an essential oil (EO) mixed in a base oil:

Please take precautions before using an essential oil. You can do a test patch on the inside elbow bend of your arm to see if your skin is too sensitive for the oil.

Some wonderful choices of healing EOs for the scalp would be lavender, rosemary, or teatree. Some like to use eucalyptus or teatree directly, but the oils can be drying, and EOs should ALWAYS be diluted, with the exception of lavender and teatree, though I recommend diluting them regardless.

10-15 drops of one of the essential oils, mixed with once fluid ounce (30ml) of a carrier oil, such as olive oil, safflower oil, avocado oil, etc. (or plain old vegetable oil works, too).

Too much oil will make your scalp a mess. Dip your thumbs in the oil blend and then wipe them across your other fingers...this will be PLENTY to do the job. Now give yourself a nice scalp massage to work the oil into the scalp. This should feel WONDERFUL, soothe the itchies, and help heal up the sores! My favorite oil to use for healing a patchy scalp is rosemary. It helps regenerate the skin cells quickly and strengthens the hair shaft/roots/follicles.

Now, if you do not have dandruff, and find that the flakes are simply a build up of skin and scalp wax, ACV is a godsend of a treatment.

You can find a bottle of ACV in most any grocery store. You do not need to purchase a bottle with the culture. A cheap bottle will do just fine, and you will see it is readily available most anywhere. (I like to toss a rosemary sprig in the bottle *WINK*)

Rinse and massage the scalp with the vinegar and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. (I use about a quarter of a bottle to do my scalp, which I've always foudn to be plenty).

If your scalp is sensative or has any sores, I recommend diluting it 1:1 (half water and half vinegar).

TRY NOT TO SOAK THE DREADS in the ACV. Dreads work like a sponge, and they will absorb the ACV, making it hard to remove the smell, which will be noticeable when the scalp sweats or is wet. Do not worry if some of the vinegar gets in there. It will eventually wash out.

A good way to spread the vinegar around the scalp and roots without saturating the locks is by placing the ACV into a squeeze bottle and applying it that way. Works like a charm.

After the soak, wash away the vinegar...try to keep it away from the eyes. There will be no need to use soap or shampoo, unless the smell bothers you. The smell should go away when the hair dries.
