K, my buddy David was here in the summer Lioni on here. he had this in some of his dreads. I even pulled one of his ends apart to examine that ****. Its scalp oils, lint, dust and build up  Makes this waxy gummy gray grossness...

Kills it., Just do it once every couple months, a real good soak, and you wont have this issue..
 its that easy
