Need ideas on materials.
Hi. First of all, kick ass costumes.
Second, I'm shocked no one's taken this name yet. '_'
Third, I'm looking to build my own Bumblebee costume. I'm not very mechanically inclined, but I'd like to add some extra features that require a body that is lightweight, yet durable. I will defenitely need something stronger than cardboard and maybe even stronger than sheet metal without too much extra weight, hopefully 70 pounds or less, and easy (enough) to shape and mold into curves.
I know it's asking a lot. If anyone can suggest something, or point me in a direction where someone can it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for anything usefull.

Re: Need ideas on materials.
hi !!!
welcome abord !!!
so you want a material that is light and not fragile as cardboard.... what i use is a combination of styrene sheets and high quality cardboard.... first build your frame of cardboard strenghen with small wood rods and the cover it all with styrene sheets (0.040-0.080 thick will do) ...this is the best and cheapest combination that i have found and all of my costumes are made that way !!!

Re: Need ideas on materials.
Hi mark,
your costumes are amazing and I would eventually love to purchase One or two (gundam and yellow lambo)with all the whisles and bells when I can. as for now I looked up styrene sheets but I'm not sure what they are or how to color them and use them in a costume, so far Ive only used cardboard and duct tape to make mine could you tell me a good website that I could order from and find out what Styrene is? also what do you use to make the joints (elbows, knees, shoulders, etc.)move in your costumes? if you could help I would greatly appreciate it, thanks.

Re: Need ideas on materials.
hi !!
well styrene is a very sturdy and extremly flexible plastic that you can make into any shape (by cutting or heating it up a bit) and is the primary material that i use to cover the costumes that i make..... also they come in all shape and thcikness !!
also a place that you can buy styrene from at a price that is unbeatable (trust me on that ) is at :
http://www.lairdplastics.com/
also the bigest sheets that they have measure about 8 feet by 4 feet (huge !!)
as for the articulation systems that i use well i get inspired allot by looking at gundam models !!! that,s how i figured how to make my first articulations and use the same basic design ever since....
