No professional competitions (that I know of). I've won prizes at some costume parties ...

Somebody should make a directory of this kind of thing. I'm sure there are contests in my city, but damned if I know where any of them are. I'm not about to get decked up as Cybertron's greatest hero just to wander the streets looking for bars that have signs in the window.

Love the Optimus. The overall proportions are about right (although the pelvis/abdomen junction, like RandomFerret pointed out, could be raised).

The elbows are great work. I also like the feet and the Anniversary-style vents on the legs. The smokestacks look suitably metallic and have the correct holes. The head design is perfect (with the possible exception of the side panels/antennae). Thank you for getting the silver/grey abdomen side panels right - too many costumers omit them altogether. The Autobot symbol on the left shoulder is exactly as it should be.

The hands are nice. Do the fingers flex, or are they permanently in one position? The gun is great - it looks thick, heavy and metallic.

The head-linked-to-helmet idea rocks. Can Prime look up and down, too? Oh, and the idea for stretch lycra over the armholes. My own idea was a small plastic panel on a spring, but lycra is much easier to work with.

Is there any way to build a framework inside the costume torso that will help support your upper arms and/or elbow? Something strong enough to handle the weight of the costume arms, but flexible enough so you can still move?

Now, the criticisms you wanted -

The knees could probably use some work. Is there an easy way to tuck the upper legs into the lower ones? Perhaps a flexible framework from crotch to knees, with grey spandex/stretch-lycra over it?

The chest panels I'm not sure about. Perhaps something with less texture. I've heard that you can see through stretched spandex, but don't know if cellophane behind spandex would be better in terms of preventing people looking in.

The hands seem a smidgeon thin - perhaps a tiny layer of buildup on the backs?

Should the sides of the lower legs have a bit of visual texture? Just enough to match the front blue parts, which are very nice.

Any plans to make the eyes and/or gun interior light up? Even some neon cyan plastic or fabric for the eyes would be great. Prime looks a little dead with black eye sockets.

>The hands are nice. Do the fingers flex, or are they permanently in one position?

Fixed in position, I'm afraid. I did intend to have them flexing but ran out of time. But they do retract back into the arms!

>Can Prime look up and down, too?

Only a little bit, but it was usually enough. I had to find a balance between having the head hole big enough to let him move his head about, but small enough so that you couldn't see my face and that there wasn't a lot of light getting inside the torso, which would have let people see my face through the chest ports.

>Is there any way to build a framework inside the costume torso that will help support your upper arms and/or elbow?

The arms were fairly light and the torso was fairly strong, so there should have been some way to secure the arms properly. (An arm actually fell off once durign the show. Luckily I caught it before it fell all the way to the ground.) The shoulder joints were actually screwed onto a wooden shelf inside the torso which sat just above my shoulders. The tricky thing is that the arm has to extend away from the body when it folds back for the transformation (which never worked anyway, but I'm still gunning for it) so they can't be attached rigidly to the torso. I did connect the arms to the shoulders with springs at one time but the springs were too weak and they got stretched out of shape, so they ended up being fairly useless.

>The knees could probably use some work. Is there an easy way to tuck the upper legs into the lower ones? Perhaps a flexible framework from crotch to knees, with grey spandex/stretch-lycra over it?

Those upper legs / knees only survived for that photo and the rest of the time I ended up wearing black pants, which looked incredibly bad from an authenticity point of view. (I've noticed in a lot of Transformers costumes that the upper legs often get left out.) I had a lot of trouble making upper legs which didn't foul the stilts, and after I'd fallen over once I was more prepared to leave that part of the costume out rather than risk being tripped.

>The chest panels I'm not sure about.

The creased chest panels are horrible. They'll be replaced in short order. I also want to have them opening so I can build a Matrix of Leadership into the costume. They also need a lot more detail, such as rivets and windscreen wipers.

>Should the sides of the lower legs have a bit of visual texture? Just enough to match the front blue parts, which are very nice.

And the inside panles of the lower legs should have some texture too.

>Any plans to make the eyes and/or gun interior light up? ...Prime looks a little dead with black eye sockets.

The eyes had blue cellophane in them (they look black because of the angle) and they did have a light behind them at some point, but the batteries lasted much shorter than I thought and had run out completely by the time the stage production had started.

A light in the gun interior would rock ... I actually gave that ion cannon away to one of the other actors in the show as a trophy (and he frickin' loves it!) so when I make the new one I'll design a light into it.

If this is a G1 Grimlock (as opposed to a RiD Grimlock), I'd imagine the major problem would be that if the costume transforms the same way as the original toy

And if you don't have the toy or the booklet handy, here's an online copy of the instructions:

Yep, that'd be one tricky costume.

You know, you could always just make the designs public if you don't think you'd get around to doing it yourself... HINT. BEG.

You HAVE to make both. The question is: which one are you going to make first?

A transformable Jetfire would be cool but a transformable Grimlock is going to be INSANELY cool.
