Re: transformers halloween costumes
HI Everyone. Sorry that I haven't posted in a while. I got a new job and I've been running my rear off trying to get situated. Probably too early to be thinking about this and might be too dangerous due to drowning risk. BUt would't it be awesome and I do mean AWESOME to have a transforming costume of a boat of somesort that actually floats and propels through the water? LIke I said prob too dangerous due to drowning risk but I read where you may create a costume that rolls. BTW you do that and you gotta sale here! I'd love to have a rolling Dakota costume I've seen a lot of good costume ideas over at www.10fingers.com/3d/transform.htm
Anyway, I got the dvr set to record... again. Nothing on you, Mark. We all know you mean well.
Also, I want to Advertise you around here. WE have some cosplayers that would kill for costumes like these. I bring the site up at work as often as possible and show it off. Maybe we could design some flyers? Then again that may create too much popularity. lol I think you have the potential for a great company here though and would love to see it take off! Please forgive the long post but I got into some Aderhol...ithink that's how you spell it.. lol and I just wanna talk talk talk... type type type. BUt for real though Mark I know you are a very busy man but when you have the time and feel like it can you maybe do a rough sketch/design of a Dakota costume? I'll foward you some cash just e-mail me with a quote. I totally respect your work here.
Take care everyone! BTW what happened to Steve over at TFCosplay? Looks like we need to do some more scouting for our pal. I hope he's ok as well as everone else. God Bless you all!

Re: transformers halloween costumes
DF: While the Devastator costume would be cool as a reference to his role in TF:TM ( "Prepare for termination." ), and also as it's his 20th anniversary as a Hasbro toy, Unicron would also rock.
If you end up doing Unicron, you might be interested to know that costumers from the fuzzier side of the tracks have been working furiously on controllable wingpacks for the past two years, and have come up with some truly great engineering.
Articulated, animated, electric or gas cylinder wing skeletons with controls:

http://www.chameleon.net/~diadexxus/diadexxus/wings/wings.html
http://www.avians.net/legend/wingquest.html
Cheaper wing skeletons:

And last but not least, a page on breath weapons.
I'm not exactly sure what kind of accessories a Unicron costume would use. Maybe a sponge Junkion cruiser to squeeze, or an SFC Galvatron with his feet stuck to the front of the costume's chest, looking upwards in horror. Heh.

Re: transformers halloween costumes
Thanks for those wicked wing resources, I can't wait to get started on it, it should be pretty unreal.
I'm still not sure what I'm gonna build the general frame out of, right now I'm thinking some kind of light weight pvc piping.
I need to design it so it can be taken apart easily enough so that I can take it apart for transport and put it back together at the club.

Re: transformers halloween costumes
Way to go Mark! The costumes looked awesome on tv! Especially how the costume moves around. OMG and the look on his face when you told him he had to take off his clothes!! lol priceless! Oh and thanks for not telling anyone about that awesome toy stash in your basement I give it a 10+ rating but I didn't appreciate Brendon's... is that his name... comment about transformer fans before the segment started. Anywho WOW is really all I have left to say and after seeing that, you should have plenty of new business!

Re: transformers halloween costumes
WRT the bandwidth, you could try something I've been experimenting with on TFCosplay: coralizing.
Basically, change the image urls so that they reference the picture files not directly, but indirectly via the Coral caching service. Coral will then cache your image files all over the world as they're requested by the first visitor, and hand them out to the next five thousand without touching your own personal bandwidth. Text isn't cached, but it'll cut down your image bandwith by a factor of ten or more.
And yes, it's a free service.
Info and instructions at http://www.scs.cs.nyu.edu/coral/
Which reminds me, TFCosplay is due for an update. When I get a moment, sigh.

Re: transformers halloween costumes
It seems like no-one's posted here in a while. As for me, I've finally tracked down a bootleg Devastator and have measured the major dimensions of each component in vehicle and Devastator mode.
I figure that expanding the toy size by around 12-fold should make a Devastator costume towering eight foot four (to top of head). With a fourteen-inch gap between the ground and the wearer's feet, and assuming a six-foot wearer, that places Dev's scalp the same fourteen inches over the top of the wearer's, who should be looking out over the middle of the chest-wing.
This is assuming you want a toy-accurate costume, and arm control will still be problematic. Unless you're using twitch-waldoes inside the thing, in which case you're a better engineer than I am.
Now, if you want a HOC-accurate or Movie-accurate costume, that requires some creative stretching and squishing.
Interestingly enough, I *think* I can get something almost Movie-accurate, and able to not only separate into the Constructicons' vehicle modes, but combine in a vaguely flying-through-the-air sequence.
The tricky bits, as it turns out, are not rigging the combination mechanics, but doing color changes. Bonecrusher's treads and Long Haul's ore tray both change color to purple in Movie Devastator mode.
There's also the matter of where the kibble comes from. The forearms (folded up under their respective Constructicons), the head (collapsed and stored on Hook), the hip connectors (mostly in Scrapper and Mixmaster), the abdominal bulk (folded plates under Long Haul) and the huge V-wing on the chest (collapsed and stored under Hook).
This lot is purely because a Devastator merge sequence on stage is a lot more impressive if all the kibble comes flipping and folding out of the vehicles, rather than stage hands attaching it manually afterwards or something. I especially want to replicate the rising of Devastator's head up out of Hook, with a momentary brilliant red eye glow.
Anyway, a Movie Dev costume (transforming or not) requires the vehicles to be scaled up differently from each other, as otherwise he'd be about eleven feet tall and almost the same across the shoulders. After some calculation, I've penciled in preliminary scale-ups of 9-fold for Hook, 12-fold for the limbs, and 15-fold for Long Haul. I've also changed Long Haul's transformation almost into unrecognisability in order to make a ore-hauler with a green tray into a solid abdominal block (not L-shaped like the toy) with a purple tray on the back.
I also had to change it because the costume wearer would be inside Long Haul in vehicle mode, and they'd otherwise end up with the back of their head sticking out of Dev's spine. Not to mention the problems with arm articulation.
Come to think of it, there's really no reason each of the six vehicles couldn't also turn into the standard robot modes, except that it would take another level of engineering talent altogether. Each robot would stand about, oh, four feet tall. Except for Long Haul, who would stand around five feet tall and require the wearer to stoop considerably, and Hook, who would stand closer to three, unless expansion plating was added.
Anyone doing a Mechatronics thesis and want a project? You'll need 1 metric buttload of plastic and metal, 1 shedful of tools, five Robosapien 2 toys, a solid knowledge of engineering, electronics and programming, and five humungous RC battery packs.
Alternatively, buy a year of Marc D's time for about fifty grand...

Re: transformers halloween costumes
So, Transformerscon is next month, and I won't be the only one in costume. Wayward of insecticons.com will be there in a new costume. I know what it is, but I'm keeping mum. Let's just say it's green. And also it's name is Hook.
Of course, she makes her costumes for the cons and only the cons. The relative pedestrianism of an Optimus Prime costume means I'll be able to make my production costs back at halloween.
Am I right, guys? Yeah, I'm right.

Re: transformers halloween costumes
It's true that Optimus is the most readily recognisable character for the general public. The main problem with him is that he's so popular in costuming circles that you really need to pull off something special to get any kind of fan recognition.
Has anyone yet created an Optimus that can transform with the wearer inside, without breaking either costume or wearer, and without looking like ass in either mode?
And hearing about Wayward makes me want to turn up and present her with a giant Devastator-head and chest wing to lug around
The burning question is - has she arranged to turn up with five friends?
