Re: transformers halloween costumes

Hey everyone been a long time since I've been in here. My transformable Grimlock costume turned out reasonably well, though a lot of area's got rushed once crunch time happened. I've got some photo's around here somewhere that I really need to get scanned in and posted.

Anyways what brought me here was I just started working on this years costume which is going to be a transformable Optimus costume, I've got almost all the engineering done on it. It's gonna transform almost exactly like g1 prime.
In order to do the arm transformation my arms are going to pull out of the costume and tuck into the chest piece, and the chest piece will pull wider in order to accomadate my arms.
At that point the entire chest piece will flip around so the back is now my front, at which point I can just sit down and the legs will stay relatively the same.
I've decided to keep a blog on the progress of the costume, plus it gives me a reason to play with my camera.
http://tfcostume.blogspot.com/
I will try to update it daily as the costume progresses over the next couple months. I'm hoping a lot of the costume will come together fairly quickly since I'm basing it on the last prime I did.
I'd be interested to hear anyones thoughts on these ideas, or if anyones attempted this yet?

hi !!!

well you basicly had all of the same ideas that i had for a optimus prime costume.... the one thing that differs is the windshield on top of the cab that becomes the back piece in robot mode...that way the wind shield hides primes head in truck mode !!! cant wait to see it completed !!!

For those who remember the old TFCosplay site, there's now a Wiki version that anyone can upload their costumes, links, photos, articles, opinions etc to.

Yes, it's the Transformers Cosplay Wiki!

Hey all

I'm a member of BOTB and so far have made a batman, star wars, and a very good wizard costume over the years.

My next goal is to build an optimus prime for as cheap as possible.
The only things that I want to have 100% are sitting ability, it must fit through a standard doorway, and I want to be recognized as prime.

I have the general idea down, but the head is messing me up.

So far my materials consist of a large box (treadmill), gorilla-glue, and spraypaint.

I would like any/all hep you guys can give me.
It doesn't have to transform(yet)as I will be wearing it to the movie this summer.

Thanks in advance,
batbrat

well you have basic materials.... but i recommend using hot glue sticks for cardboard and if you can use styrene sheets for the external layer of your costume...

Re: transformers halloween costumes

Well after a failed attempt to make a transforming optimus costume last year I'm ready to attempt again.

Unfortunately last year the game company I worked for was working me 14 hour days and I had a 2 hour commute.

Now I'm in a much more comfortable environment and it only takes me 10 minutes to get to work. This year I'm using that corrugated plastic stuff they use for signs.

Last year I modded my older optimus costume for halloween and fixed up all the joints, I'm using that knowledge this year to create a fairly simple transformation, think powermaster prime's cab.

I'm also planning on having the trailer transform ala powermaster if there's time. I want to get the cab finished for the movie premier, so far it's off to a good start.
I have the shoulders transforming and figured out how the arms are going to work last night.
Unfortunately I don't have a camera, I might attempt to take some pic's with my webcam but the quality is very low. Need to get someone over who has a camera.

Oh and I gotta say Mark your metroplex is looking amazing been following the thread on tfw2005.

Re: transformers halloween costumes

I'm currently sketching out ideas for a transformable Optimus Prime for Halloween 2008, seems to be easiest to build and for others to recognize.

I've been saving pictures of most of the costumes I've seen here and elsewhere for reference and basic concepts on creating my own.

I'm looking to make the transformation similar to G1 Prime, but with a few variations. I don't want to sit down in vechile mode because I saw a design I liked on Youtube(the front of the legs unfolded and had the wearer be able to lay down on his knees with his head down in the chest, but with his butt in the air [which I did not like at all]) and the only way to sit down is to turn the torso around (I think that's the only way) which I don't think I want to do.

For the arms to fit in vechile mode, I was planning on angling the back of the forearms and lower portion of the upper arms for a right angle and just fit into the side of the torso. Or, just making the upper arm short and extending the forearm to still make it fit right.

To avoid my butt sticking out, I was planning on having the back of the torso unfold (just have hinges and have it move with me) and have a piece of canvas unfurl with the Autobot symbol painted on (this is for the left and right sides of the torso) For the back of this, I was going to just have a cardboard flap hang down or something like that.

I know this will make the cab look big and goofy, but this is just for Halloween marching band practice (we wear costumes and play, for the past 2 years I didn't do anything, and this year I wore a Chinese dragon head I picked up in Chinatown; so for my senior year I wanna have something that'll make everyone "ooo" and "aah"). I don't need to worry too much about movement because I play the xylophone so I might just take off the helmet and forearms to actually play. And I think I'll leave lights out, for now at least, but I'm unsure if I want a Matrix for it yet.

I haven't started planning on how I wanted to do the head, so ideas are very much welcomed here and elsewhere.

I read that wood and cardboard and styrene was the way to go on the costume.
Does that mean line the cardboard with a grid of small wooden rods and the outside with the styrene sheets? Also, do you apply paint directly to the styrene, or do you paint underneath and cover that with the styrene?
Do any stores like Home Depot or Lowe's sell styrene? I'm afriad if I buy stuff over the Internet and have it not arrive or some crazy thing like that happen.

On average, how much should the whole thing cost at the end?

Sorry for the long post, but this is my first time building a costume and wanted to get all my thoughts and concerns in one post.
