Actually, the cast came off today! My tendons are like leather, though. The surgeon says I won't have full movement for three months, but since I can type and play the piano about half as well as I used to, I think I'll be good to go by the end of the month. Pysiotherapy be damned!

I dunno, maybe I can do it. Right now I'm really just looking forward to your guys' costumes!

Hey guys, I'm at the point in my costume where I need to build the matrix for my matrix chamber, I want it to be able to glow for extra effect, anyone have any idea what to construct it out of?

Well, I'm using one of those translucent balls with a glow stick you can get at dollar stores.

Yep, I'm working on it again! I'm going with the scaled-up paper model plan. Now, unless I hear a better idea, I'm going to print it out at original size onto projector sheets and use an overhead to trace it onto big sheets of cardboard. I'm just really worried about distortion. Anybody have any suggestions?

(I wish I could contact the guy who did the scaled-up party decoration. He has the answer right there, and I can't figure it out!)

Well what I did was I made all my measurements did my designs then set up photoshop and drew out all my designs to measurement, and took that photoshop file to a printing place and they printed it out on like 3" by 15" pieces of paper or something around that size. then I just taped it onto the styrofoam I was using and cut it out. Hmm transluscent balls with a glowstick you say, I will have to go check out my local dollar store.

Ooh, it's getting close!
Everybody, progress report!

Me, I have all the pieces rescaled in a .psd, and I'm surprised at how many alterations it needed. Good thing I did a test build at 1/10 scale first.

I'm still looking into printing options.

I've decided that I don't have time to make the matrix, although I have the glowy ball and two halves of a street hockey ball already. But I do have a microphone and speaker to make me sound more like Prime and also to beatbox with when I do my rap.
Every halloween I do a rap in-character. It's a tradition I started just last year.

*pm*, *pm*, *phm*, *pm*, *pmpm*, *phm*
*transform noise*

It's about time I lay my rhyme
I go by the name of Optimus Prime
I'm the perfect soldier
The Matrix holder,
I'm brave and bold
And I never fold, yeah.
Balls are made of solid brass
I've got the touch, I've got the class
Ain't no test that I can't pass
My pecs are ****ing plexiglass!

Gah. Mid-month update, after all kinds of delays. Thanks for the AX links, DJ. Next month might be a little easier if Halloween spawns a crop of Transformers.

I wonder if anyone's thinking of stepping out as cartoon Zombie Prime, Shredded G2 Marvel Megatron, or Half-Smashed Dreamwave Magnus? How about the movie's Carbonised Starscream, Dying Megatron, Dead Wheeljack, Riddled Ratchet, Fusion-Blasted Ironhide, or a hungry Sharkticon? Heck, a Unicron costume would fit the bill (especially for candy-scrounging).

yeah I'd like to do it on stilts just to make it look really big, and then I want to have my arms kind of bent at 90 degrees going into the arms so my forearms would be in the upper arm area, so that way I could make the chest wider, and then have the lower arms on some kind of wire system connected to my hands

That's pretty much the system I used for my recent Optimus Prime costume:
http://www.robothour.no-ip.info/images/optimus.jpg
.... and I have to say that I was really happy with the result. I didn't actually have time to build the wire system for the articulated hands but that can always come later.
Here's a few notes on the 90 degree arm design:

a) It hurts to keep your arms in this position for any time, especially if the lower arms have much weight in them and you move them around a lot. And if your character is going to be carrying a gun then try to avoid lifting it too much, especially when people ask you to pose for a photo and take forever to take the shot. Ow ow ow. I made Prime's Ion Cannon out of super light cardboard but when you consider that the tip of the gun is over a metre away from your hand, even a small amount of weight will kill your muscles.

b)Getting the elbows to work properly can be tricky, but is fairly important in getting the costume to move naturally. Since your own elbows are pretty much immovable in the costume you need to use your wrist to move the costume's elbow and your fingers to move the wire system for the costume's fingers. This means that the costume's hands will be locked into postion and can't turn. You've got to choose between having working costume elbows or working costume wrists. I found working elbows to be more useful.

c) One problem with having a really wide chest is that it might be too wide and the costume will look squat and ugly. I got around this by building the chest up past my head and connecting Prime's head to a helmet, so it sticks out the top of the torso. This allows you to move the costume's head fairly naturally and as long as you can figure out some way of looking through the costume's chest (Prime is easy since he has his pectoral windshields) you'll be fine. Everyone always talks to the fake head, which takes some adjusting to. You'll need a speaker system if you want people to hear you since the costume will muffle your voice.

d) If you have a really wide chest you might need to be up on stilts to give the costume the correct proportions. If your arms are stuck out at 90 degree angles and your hands are in the costume's elbows then you need to be *really really* good at stilt walking, because you *really* don't want to fall over. If you start tipping then there's really no way of stopping yourself from going down. I only ever fell over once in public in my Prime costume (those big blue boots are hiding 1 foot high stilts) and I was pretty much trapped. Luckily there were plenty of TF fans nearby to haul me back onto my feet.
The stilt design I used was pretty much a wooden box (gives a very wide base, which makes everything much easier) for each stilt with inline skate boots bolted in at the right height. Unfortunately they ended up weighing about 10kg per boot, which is an awful lot, but it does make a very satisfying stomping noise every time you take a step. Make sure the stilts are made of some material that will support your weight plus the weight of the costume plus the force of all the stomping around you'll be doing. And be advised that you'll need help getting into them!

e) If you do go with the higher chest option then the shoulders of the costume might get tricky, especially if you want them to fold back for a transformation. I had the shoulder hinge up above my own shoulders and my arms stuck out holes in the side of the costume. Your forwards and backwards movement of the costume's arms is somewhat hampered but not enough to cause major problems. 2-way stretch lycra of a similar colour to the costume's chest can be stetched across the inside of the arm holes, so when you pull your arms back inside the costume they spring back and mask the gap. Pulling your arms back into the costume can be tricky and you may need to make the holes fairly large so that you can pull your elbows back in.

f) Be careful with the upper legs up the costume, because if they foul the stilts then you'll go down in a heap. Not fun.

I made a Macross-type transforming Jetfire costume for my local birdman rally this year, where I walked up in robot mode, transformed into jet mode and then jumped off. It was made to be crashed into a river so it didn't have much detail, but people were impressed anyway. I won the 'Most Creative' award but I wasn't happy with the costume since I ran out of time and didn't have the arms or legs completed. Robot Jetfire with human arms and legs just looks stupid. If you go to http://www.fairfaxphotos.com/consumer/ and put in a search for 'birdman rally' then I'll be the one in the middle ...
