Town Centre on its last legs ?
When are those in power going to realise that the town centre is dying and has almost reached the point of no return.
The amount of shops worth paying car park charges for is now almost negligable. If a trial was done for a period of 3/6 months, with the first hours parking free, I am sure the shops would see an uplift in business. 9 times out of 10, I merely want 1 item from 1 shop, and out of principle refuse to pay an hours parking for this 1 item. If the spending in the town was more buoyant, more shops would open in the town, and more people would then have a reason to park longer in the town car parks, and believe they could justify the parking charges.
The only current justification for paying car park charges in Melksham, is if you want to go to fast food shops/ charity shops/ banks or estate agents.

Re: Town Centre on its last legs ?
You can park in the Lowbourne car park free for an hour.
When you say you refuse to pay for an hours parking, do you park illegally or do you go elsewhere?

Re: Town Centre on its last legs ?
Hi Free Speech.
By Lowbourne, do u mean the one behind Pea****s ? (I still call it Coopers car park). Or do u mean the main council car park further down ?
I realise that pea****s and also in front of the town hall can be free, if you are lucky, but I was aiming my thread towards the main car parks.
No, I dont park illegally, I would rather drive to one of the "corner shops" or supermarkets ......... although deep down I would rather give my business to the town centre shops.
Doing a weekend shop in the butchers and greengrocers is worthwhile, and we should remain grateful that we still have this option, as so many towns have lost both, but , for example, I would never dream of paying to park to buy a newspaper etc.

Re: Town Centre on its last legs ?
Actually Ivor, I was referring to the main car park opposite the old Giffords surgery.
I stopped using the one behind Peahens when
Coopers closed down and they started clamping cars for not being parked in marked bays, you couldn't even see half of them!
If you're lucky you can quite often park behind the Card and News shop.

I always laugh at the Avon Place Shopping Centre sign - There's a travel agent, estate agent, dry cleaners and Iceland. I don't think Cribbs Causeway should be worried just yet.

Yeah, it's a joke really.
I don't pay for parking when I can help it, the prices keep going up but we don't see much for the extra money...

Re: Town Centre on its last legs ?
Surely though there must be some saving graces for the town? At least we've got a Boots and Woolies which is more than Westbury has.
