Melksham at Christmas

I thought I would vent my thoughts through your forum on melksham at christmas - Our town is stunning compared with all others locally and as i understand it is all carried out by unpaid volonteers. Having spoken to the guys decorating the town hall last weekend I also understand alot of the lights and displays are now ' homemade ' for want of a better word! Melksham consistently looks superb at this time of year, including the displays of houses at the fire station end of town and yet i dont recall any praise for our town - even though other local towns recieve much press and tv coverage for lesser displays, or do i just need to get out more?!?

Well done to all concerned!

Ill join you in that MM,FANTASTIC DISPLAYS AS EVER IN MELKSHAM!!!

My children always look forward to the Street fair and the switching on of the lights, and we love doing our annual ramble around Melksham to see all the stunningly decorated houses.

Well done to all the volunteers who give up their time to put up the lights.....I often see them early on a Sunday Morning as I am off to work

And yes you are right, poor old Melksham never gets any TV praise or coverage for its far Superior efforts!!

I like most people took it for granted, and assumed that alot of the work is done by contractors or council staff, so speaking to the guys really was a eye opener for me.

The people of melksham should be exceptionaly grateful to these people - the real 'mr (and mrs!?) Christmas'!! Who actively work towards - if not celebrate, for months in advance.

The house in longford road ( i think?) draws crowds, and raises much needed funds for charity - All I believe the work of one young man.

Having scanned over the net for comments about our lights I thoughtt id join this site to comment myself.

Having worked for months on the planning and building of this years lights I ( and I speak for the others involved) are delighted that people are impressed by this years lights, My opinion is obviously very biased but having looked around other local towns we really do have something to be proud of!

We are looking at the possibility of having a 'design a light' style competion, for perhaps a number of smaller lights for lamposts or poentially one larger motif to be placed somewhere decent in town - If I can use this site to test the water of this idea and if theres any positive feedback perhaps this can be extnded to run in the paper itself?

Initial thoughts would include any resident of melksham of any age ( why not?! ) and there would only be limits on size ( you would be surprised how big we can build though!) and colours used - other than that people can use there imaginations.

Any ideas are abslutely welcome for anything that can improve or change for next year - We have a very small team and really do bite off alot more than we can chew but anythings possible - so let us know what you want to see and I will have a go ready for 2006/2007!

Apologies for the essay - but anybody wishing to get involved with the lights is more than welcome, and obviously help is required taking them down in january, I will also be working here and there over the year building and repairing so it isnt all cold weather jobs...

Please feel free to contact us via this site or if you prefer contact the town hall and ask for the message to be passed on to Paul Weymouth.

Yes... I know its May...

As some people who read the paper in its entirety will know there is a certain councillor who seems to object to us saving the town litterally tens of thousands of pounds every year by doing are own lights, centering around 'our' town cherry picker, which is used constantly throughout the year for maintainance tasks etc, and for around 5 weeks during xmas to erect and maintain the lights.

He also states in a pre election flyer how he supports local business's, yet gets it printed in shaftesbury, he states how the town hall wastes huge amounts of money, yet on the reverse tells how his wife has used it to raise thousands for charity... you cant have it both ways!!! The list could go on for ever.

People in melksham need to be aware of what a small band of people do for the town for no reward - not just talking about the lights- its a tiny part of it, there are loads of groups doing similar jobs whether it be for charity, or for the good of the town generally... with councillors etc contantly slating there work, picking holes and generally winding them up sooner or later people will just give up.

I do the lights ( all bloody year one way or another!) cos I enjoy doing it, it interests me, its great to see the end result and that people have become quite proud of it, theres only a very small group who help us and already half of them are at the point where they can no longer cope with being in the middle of a political slanging match centering around a piece of kit we bought for next to sod all 5 or 6years ago, that would cost us hundreds of pounds a day to rent if we didnt have it.

Whats peoples opinions on this, are people aware of the nonsense that goes on - Seems people have been sucked in by his propoganda and elected him.

So if your reading this Cllr Wiltshire, am I meant to mention names?! your help with the lights will be much appreciated when we have nobody to put them up, thats if we can get off the ground in the first place after you flog are most valuable tool.
