Drop-in Centre

Where then is the centre to go? Are we to hide our young people away as if we are ashamed of them? I hope not! I feel that by providing a centre with a prominent position in Westbury, it demonstrates the Town's commitment to our young people, some of whom may be the businesspeople taking up leases for shops in the town in the next decade or two.

It's interesting you should say that Puc as it is a view expressed by several people already, including some town centre shopkeepers. One person said to me that it can only be a good thing to encourage young people into the town centre, and perhaps there has to be something said for integration of different parts of the community.

On the other side of the coin though I think it may be the case that if a town centre shop unit has it's use changed for a drop in centre, that unit will then be lost for retail purposes, and with more charity shops in Westbury occupying units perhaps we need to keep the few that we have left?

I don't understand why people think there should be only shops in a particular place.

Increasingly people are shopping online. Surely we should be encouraging alternative uses for these premises which are ideally situated in the centre of town with good parking facilities and transport links (soon to be a new cycle route towards the Station too).

I'd like to see some of the parking spaces removed so we can have some tables outside with a more continental cafe style feel to it.

I've always thought that when I look at Westbury High Street, it has a kind of carnival-continental feel to it in a strange 60s architectural kind of way.

It could certainly be much better than it is, and the space better used. Perhaps if/when the bypass becomes a reality there will be some scope to improve the town centre.
