Awesome Naruto Factoid!
I just learned, by way of my Shinto mailing list, that a big part of Naruto was actually based on a kabuki play! There are many smaller things to be learned from this and they are listed below:
The play itself is called Jiraiya Goraketsu Monogatari. So firstly, we see where Jiraiya's name was derived!!
Here is a quote from the mailing list:
I went to Kabuki today featuring an evil man who transformed himself into a snake. The two heroes transformed themselves into a frog and a sea-slug!
Obviously, the snake, frog and sea-slug are in reference to at least Sasuke, Naruto, and Sakura, respectively, as they are all three featured early on in the manga on chapter cover-pages interacting with those animals. On top of that, the three animals are also representative of Orochimaru, Jiraiya, and Tsunade, also respectively, as well.
I read that this particular play is relatively unknown. I am assuming that this influence on Naruto was from the near-begining, judging from those cover-pages. But I also wonder, now, how many other things are hidden within Naruto's general being...

Re: Awesome Naruto Factoid!
oh ya thats so cool, i knew that jiraiya and orochimaru came from japanese mythology but i didn't know they came from a kabuki play. if you go to www.narutofever.com and look under all the stuff in the "scroll house" category they have a lot of info on all the references in naruto to japanese mythology its pretty interesting.

But they are/were the number one most popular animes in America. I'd say the two most known here...

Lupin III, Gundam, One Piece, and many others that have way more popularity in Japan than here.
