 A Thought on Poetry
I'm sure many of you believe in the popular idea that poetry is a thing to interpreted however one whishes to interpret it. Most people believe that. I don't know when it began, but personally I think it is a rediculous notion.
Now, before you get all hot and bothered about me saying you can't have your own opinions, please finish reading this piece.
I am certainly NOT saying that you cannot have your own opinions on poetry or anything else for that matter. What I am saying is that people need to stop making things up in their minds about the meanings of poems, simply because they cannot understand, or don't want to try to understand the literature. Meanings of poetry and opinions on poetry are two completely different things.
You may wonder how I can be so sure that poetry can't have hundreds or thousands of differing meanings. I know because I write myself. I don't know if anybody likes my writings, and not many of them are ever seen by anyone other than myself, but I do know that I have never EVER written to try and create a poem that could mean a hundred things. I write to tell a story, I write to express a feeling, or to create a feeling. Anyone else that has written, even if it's a single poem, or any other literary work, would agree with me.
Of course, with the vast amounts of poetry and the increasing number of styles, there may very well be a sector of poets who write to stimulate the imagination of each person, and to call forth a seperate vision from each reader based on his or her experiences, but I have not yet read such a work.
