The Light Of His Countenance

Happy are the people who know the festal shout, who walk, O Lord, in the light of Your countenance

Thanks Jondra, I think Christians often forget that it is okay for them to laugh and have a sense of humor. I am sure God gets a good laugh at us sometimes.

Psalm 89:15 (ESV).

I like the ESV but here the translation restricts our happiness to the time of the feast festvals and in our reponse to the call of worship.

I like the thought but the majority text doesn't say this and the ESV doesn't make note of the translation normally given *sigh.*

Psalm 89:15 Blessed is the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O LORD, in the light of thy countenance. (KJV)

I picked the KJV not just because everyone is familiar with it but in this case we can see what is left out by the ESV and the ISR (the only two translations that I know of that use the term festal shout).

First is the blessing from God for those who here the call for God's people to gather at anytime, not just on the festive occasions. God will bless us when we are called together for war or peace, for births or deaths, in sickness and in health David says God will bless us if we know and respond to the joyful call from God. This is so much more than being happy,
Second it is a continuous walk in the light of God knowing he is always with us. He never leaves us, we walk in the light as he (Jesus) is in the light.

OK, just to make sure I get this in... If this comes across like I am putting down Jondra or the ESV or ISR or anything please, I pray that you understand that that is not the way I mean for it to come across. I am just making a couple of observations and this is one of those time I wish you could hear me instead of just reading my words...

Hey Pastor Rick I for one didn't take it as putting anybody or anything down. I just took it as I am sure you meant it, just to show the difference in Translations and why we (you and I at least) lean towards using the King James Version so much. Many times I have had to point out the differences between versions at my church. I like to use some of the other versions to help my understanding sometimes but I still prefer the King James fo my messages and my personal Bible Study. emoticon emoticon

MAY OUR MOST GRACIOUS, LOVING, KIND FATHER IN HEAVEN POUR HIS BLESSINGS OUT ON ALL WHO COME HERE!!!! emoticon

I like comparing the translations. It's a good thing. Besides, I knew all that I just left it for you to do all the typing. Ha, Ha

PS: I try always to be open to correction. If I don't agree I will pray about it and research it and we'll talk. I do agree with what you said. My post was a little simplistic.

I didn't take it that way Jondra. There's lots of times I see a verse in the Bible and go wow! I think this is just one of those times the translators (of that Bible verse) took the easy way out and didn't really look at what God was telling us ya know?

It was just a piece of a verse on my Daily Calendar. When I feel the goodness of God, His presence, His power, His Majesty...a shout rises up in my spirit. It's like the shouts at football games. It doesn't come out, cause I'm a Baptist, but it's a big one.
