Well, the Breton/Frank/Norman/Flemish(or whatever it was) invaders had to justify their invasion somehow. Everybody does, you know. One only has to look at more contemporary examples to see how this works. And you gotta admit, WoP certainly was an artful propagandist and spin doctor, if nothing else.

Yeah, WoP could have gained useful employment within the Nixon administration...or featured on the well-known children's UKTV reading fiction book show from the 70's/80's...Jackanory?

I wouldn't exactly call WoP "hagiography", though I suppose it comes close. WoP seems to have functioned more like a modern day publicist would, and like any good publicist, he wouldn't, couldn't mention the things about William's actions that were less than flattering.
