posticon Genealogy - Norman ancestry? Who came over with William?

Hi folks,

Can anyone please recommend a source for the names of men who came over with William?

It seems my family may be descended from a Norman called Austin/Austyn possibly involved in the Norman invasion of Ireland.

So I'm interested to know if William was accompanied by any Austin/Austyn?

Regards

Ireland:

Good luck on that. I believe there are only some sixteen named "companions". There are some dubious "rolls", that list a lot more names, but these are not generally considered authentic, and are thought to be later --- much later --- compilations. You might possibly look in Domesday for clues, though.

Thanks Anne,

The warning to be aware of dubious rolls is really useful. I'll start with the Domesday Book.

We would suggest you check all the Rolls especially Battle Abbey and the original source in Bayeux. Although the term 'dubious' can be applied to some of those named, there are very few medieval documents that do not create controversy or claims of 'apocrypha'.

WRTF and Ireland:

I warned Ireland about these "rolls" because medievalists and geneologists generally consider them dubious. Some of the same names listed on these rolls turn up in Domesday, but that is not necessarily proof positive that the people in question were necessarily at Hastings with William. And, unfortunately, the Battle Abbey "roll" is considered especially dubious, as it seems to have been copied from *another* roll that is also considered a dubious source. I'm not sure what you mean by the "original source in Bayeux", unless you are referring to the BT. There are only a few named individuals on this huge embroidery, and these individuals' names are also repeated in at least one "ship's roll" and in one or two other places. These names are not considered "dubious". As for the rest of it, as I said, there isn't any real proof, one way or another. That was why I suggested Ireland start with Domesday and work from there.
