LOL
Seriously though, I know many visitors can be a pain in the *rse but there are times when they have to be allowed to stay as long as they want. This nurse is in the wrong job.
When my father in law died in a nice new hospital somewhere in Edinburgh! his daughter sat with him for almost 20 hours holding his hand. It was what they both wanted. I might add that she herself is a nurse and god help anyone who may have asked her to leave.

I think it's disgusting. Maybe someone should look at a career change. Rules are there for good reason, but they are not inflexible. It seems however that some staff are.

Re: Daughter turned away outside visiting hours
Hmmm, Dave has a point but sadly I worry that it is more like Simpson's experience. Even if it was like Dave suggests it could have been, then it is all in the method and manner of communication. I have suggested people take a break but done so in a kindly manner and never forced people to leave. Simpson's recollections make me very sad indeed.

Re: Daughter turned away outside visiting hours
This is awful and the nurse wqas in the wrong...one wonders if for some reason the purpose of the visitors request was not realised by the nurse in question...was it a bank nurse..or a junior member of staff.... and if so why didnt they check with colleagues or at least show some level of compassion by taking a moment to ensure understanding of the realatives reason and whom she was wanting to see.
This is hopefully not a regular occurence elsewhere...at our hospital and others, staff are made aware of when visiting restrictions need to be relaxed and that courtesy to all is important even to those who do appear unreasonalbe as definitely was not the case in any of above discussed by other posters. We also provide a relatives room with an overnight bed and facilities and cant be the only ones...and if that is in use or the person prefers we accomodate them as bes we can in a recliner chair or empty bed if available...especially if the room in which the pt is is a 2 bedded room with an empty bed...by some luck.
