MRSA screening - again

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7235682.stm

We've debated this before but I'm not convinced.

We have the worst MRSA rates in the whole of Europe. Countries who have much lower rates of infection generally have some form of screening in place. It's got to be worth a go, especially with more people dying from HAIs generally than from RTAs.

This is what the Microbiologist had to say -

Microbiologist Peter Wilson says: "If we can make sure patients do not have the infection on their skin when they come in for treatment, the risk of them getting an MRSA blood infection reduces from 40% to about one in 30.

So that's fine for elective admissions but what about everyone else?

Stringent handwashing and cleaning is more important I think.

Compulsary disinfection to everyone entering/leaving a hospital, like when we had the BSE you had to do with cattle.

Actually cutting the number of people entering leaving wards and departments would help, but it seems that this is not something that the trusts pc brigade would allow.

I agree with you on this one. We need to get back to the 2 visitors at a time no picnic by the bedside etc. etc.like what it was when I were a lad.
An interesting observation by Mrs Jock who has been nursing even longer than me; back in the "olden times" before we had MRSA et al. we also did not have gloves apart from those really rubbish ones stuck to a piece of paper that we only used for suppositories/PR examins etc. This resulted in frequent and furious hand washing after ones skin had been in contact with all manner of noxious substances.and before any kind of wound /catheter care etc. BUT! NO! MRSA!!!!! Coincidence?????

You have a point. I think the gels provide an excuse not to wash hands too. Gels might be adequate against some infections but they aren't against all.

No visitors
 No Administrators
Plenty cleaners would be a better sign.
