My season preview from sfgiants.com board:

2007 Record: 5-11, 3rd in the NFC West

Head Coach: Mike Nolan, 4th season(16-32)

Key FA adds: DE Justin Smith(CIN), WR's Bryant Johnson(ARZ) and Isaac Bruce(STL), QB J.T. O'Sullivan(DET), RB DeShaun Foster(CAR), LB Dontarrious Thomas(MIN)

Key losses: DL Bryant Young, LG Larry Allen, ILB Derek Smith, WR Darrell Jackson, DE Marques Douglas, RT Kwame Harris, QB Trent Dilfer, RB Maurice Hicks

Draft(in order): DL Kentwan Balmer(UNC), G Chilo Rachal(USC), DB Reggie Smith(OU), C Cody Wallace(Texas A&M), WR Josh Morgan(Va Tech), LB Larry Grant(Ohio St)

Positives: Frank Gore bounced back from early injury issues to gain over 1100 yards on the ground. Solid inside runner that can explode into 2nd gear and also has improved a lot in the passing game as new OC Mike Martz looks to make him the focal point of the offense, both on the ground and coming out of the backfield. DeShaun Foster is a nice upgrade as the #2 back and gives the 49ers a speedy back with good size. Isaac Bruce and Bryant Johnson bring quality depth at WR to the 49ers. Bruce knows the system in and out and Johnson has the talent to step up in a starting role. Arnaz Battle is a good fit in the slot, along with talented youngsters in Jason Hill and Josh Morgan to fill out the depth chart. This is without question the best group of WR's in Nolan's tenure. Vernon Davis is a physical speciman that caught 50+ balls even though the 49ers got marginal play from 4 QB's. Delanie Walker is primed for a breakout year. He knows how to get seperation to make himself open and has improved as a blocker. David Baas and Joe Staley are the youngest starters on the OL and graded out as the 2 best linemen on the team last year. Staley is an elite athlete for his size and has the talent to be a very good LT. Baas is a road grader who showed a lot of promise. Mike Martz should prove to be an upgrade over Jim Hostler at OC. Hostler is seen around the league as someone with an OC future but many felt that he wasn't ready to take over and it showed. The defensive line got better as they added Justin Smith. Smith holds his own at the point of attack and has enough pass rushing quality to get to the QB. Isaac Sopoaga signed a contract extension and is making the move to LE. He's a strong bullrusher that is quick for his size. He has a lot of potential in this scheme. Manny Lawson returns from injury and showed improvement in coverage at OLB before injury. Patrick Willis is a beast and graded out as a top 3 ILB in the NFL last year. Nate Clements is an elite corner that shuts down one side of the field. Michael Lewis bounced back and had a solid season in this scheme. I thought it was questionable signing at the time but also thought he had good abilities for this scheme. Andy Lee was one of the best punters in the NFL last year and Joe Nedney is solid.

Negatives: 3 way QB competitions are not a good way to get camp started, especially when all the QB's have major weaknesses. J.T. O'Sullivan has entered the picture and he's never been higher than #3 on a depth chart but being a Martz-type QB gives him a chance. Shaun Hill played well in 2 games last season but has a lot of question marks. Alex Smith is on the edge of being called a bust as he was rather ineffective pre-injury and post. Vernon Davis has yet to burst out and has done a lot more talking than being productive since coming into the NFL. He's a bad route runner that sometimes struggles catching the ball. Those 2 things are vital in a Martz offense. David Baas tore his pectoral muscle a few months ago and is said to be ready by season opener but there question marks surrounding the injury. Jonas Jennings has struggled to stay on the field. While the DL has positives, it has negatives as well. Sopoaga is moving to a new position and Justin Smith is in a new scheme. While I think they will be successful in this scheme, its going to take time. Tully Banta-Cain was a huge bust as the rush passing OLB last season. Manny Lawson is coming off a major injury and has not progressed enough as a pass rusher in the NFL. He needs to get a lot stronger but refuses to do so. These 2 really need to improve their pass rush or else the 49ers are going to be same as last year when it comes to pressuring the QB. There are question marks as to who will start next to Patrick Willis. While still effective, Walt Harris is getting up there in age and depth is not really all that strong. Mark Roman is a replacement level FS. I think they could use an upgrade there.

Prediction: I'll go with 7-9 with a 6-10/8-8 potential. I think they are better than St. Louis and even with Arizona. Seattle should be atop this division rather easily. Nolan's job security will be a hot topic coming off a 4th straight losing season.

Just to update some things:

- J.T. O'Sullivan was named the starting QB for the season opener at home against Arizona on September 7th. Alex Smith and Shaun Hill round out the QB depth chart.

- 2007 4th round pick NT Joe Cohen was one of 5 cuts yesterday as the 49ers trimmed the roster to 76 players. They have to be down to 53 a week before the opener.

Sorry for not keeping this updated but here goes:

After starting 2-1, the 49ers lost 7 straight. During that period, the team fired head coach Mike Nolan and replaced him with assistant head coach Mike Singletary. Singletary's first game resulted in a blowout loss at home against lowly Seattle(my prediction sure went well for them). During the game, J.T. O'Sullivan was benched for Shaun Hill and Hill has yet to give the job back as he has prodcued 10 TD, 4 INT, and a QB rating of 95 as 49ers starter. Singletary is 3-3 through his first 6 games as 49ers head coach. His wins have come against St. Louis, @Buffalo, and New York Jets.

- Frank Gore is questionable for Sunday's game @ Miami with an ankle injury. Singletary continues to say that he will be a gametime decision.
