Briggs is a big time pass rusher (and a monster in coverage). On the other side of the ball, I would be shocked if we didn't get a big upgrade at WR. Word around the campfire is that Bernard Berrian WANTS to play here, and he would automatically make our WR corps improved. You think Briggs is a good pass rusher? He's not horrible, but he's certainly not a big time pass rusher. He's had 5 sacks in 5 seasons. He is one of the best coverage linebackers in the NFL, however. Berrian will probably get the most money out of all WR free agents this offseason, but I don't think he's the best one available. Hackett is better IMO. Sometimes numbers don't add up, I know, but according to scouts inc scouting report: 2007 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc. Grade: 81 | Key Alert: None Comment: The Bears used their franchise tag on Briggs in order to keep him in Chicago, where he is surrounded by exceptional players. Briggs is a fine playmaker in his own right and is reaching his prime. He is a fine player against the run and rushing the passer, but as a cover guy, there are few in Briggs' league. He has outstanding range, gets very deep in his drops, can cover running backs and tight ends man-to-man and also has fine ball skills and hands for the interception. He is tough, very durable and reliable. While he is a fine fit in the Tampa 2 scheme as a weakside linebacker, he has the skill set to excel in numerous schemes. As weakside linebackers go, Briggs has excellent size and a strong thick body. He has made more than 100 tackles in each of the past three seasons, including 134 in 2006. He is also good for a few takeaways every year. He plays the game in balance, rarely looks awkward and consistently maintains proper football position, keeping his numbers over his toes. His lateral agility and change of direction skills are very impressive and he is a natural knee bender and fluid athlete. He is light on his feet and technically and fundamentally sound. Briggs is an aggressive football player who works hard to make plays. He wants to win. He uses his hands very well, has natural pop and power and can get low and really jolt bigger blockers. He sheds very well. Briggs has improved every year since entering the NFL. He is a decent blitzer and times it well, but isn't a big sack guy and doesn't have a variety of different moves as a pass rusher. At times, he can be overly aggressive, but this problem has become more and more of a rarity. Finding true negatives with Briggs isn't easy to do. Neither were ever on my fantasy teams so I really haven't followed them, but to me, Berrian seems like a much safer bet. He's only a year older, but has been in the league twice as long, and has A LOT more receptions. Hackett hasn't really shown anything. The only way I see us signing Briggs is if we were switching to a 4-3 since he plays the same position as Patrick Willis in the 3-4. If we stayed in the 3-4 Briggs would be asked to do the same thing he was complaining about in Chicago, which is being the ILB that takes on blocks to allow the other ILB to make the play. The analogy that best works is that Willis is playing the RB position and Briggs would be playing the FB position of the defense. Barrian isn't a WR that fits Martz style of offense, he is a stretch the field type of receiver and Martz likes to use WR in crossing rountes and over the middle kind of stuff. --- Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. But again, I haven't followed them so my opinion is purely speculative I just think he's got better hands, and is a better route runner. He only played 6 games last season but managed to grab 32 passes. Not bad. Anyways, now that Berrian looks like hes going to Oakland, Hackett is the clear cut #1 WR available. Number two would probably be Bryant Johnson, Javon Walker, or Donte Stallworth (I'm not counting Moss because I don't think he's leaving NE). I'm actually a Bronco fan. The deal includes $20 million in guarantees. He never made it to Minneapolis. Smith, the No. 4 pick in 2001, will be used often with his hand up in San Francisco's 3-4, allowing Tully Banta-Cain to be a nickel rusher. He'll also see a good amount of action at end in the Niners' 4-3 fronts. Smith hasn't played linebacker as a pro, but has the motor and athleticism to be effective there.
