49er sign Cincy DEJustin Smith to 6yrs, $45M
2007 Scouting Report - Scouts Inc.
Comment: Named the Bengals' franchise player, Smith had the best year of his career at right defensive end in 2006, registering six and a half sacks in the first seven games and 81 total tackles. Still, he hasn't quite lived up to his lofty draft status. He has a good body for the position, one that is well defined and thick with good height and arm length. He has continued to add bulk and strength since joining the league, and that no longer can be considered a negative. He has never missed a game. Strangely, Smith usually operates from a four-point stance. He is a tough football player, will play hurt and has proven to be very durable. He has been reliable. Smith consistently chases the ball and makes plays downfield and from the backside in pursuit. He is a physical hitter and pretty good wrap-up tackler who is capable of jarring the ball loose. In the running game, he is difficult for most tight ends to handle and does a fine job of staying square to the line of scrimmage. He stays disciplined with his run lanes. He displays very good recognition with a strong feel for his position and the game in general. Smith can jolt blockers with his straight-ahead power. Off the snap, he has good, but not great quickness. He has several pass rush moves and continues to improve his skills and repertoire of countermoves, but many of his sacks are the result of hustle. Smith doesn't excel in any one area of his game, nor is he glaringly deficient in any area. He isn't particularly fluid and cannot bend the edge like many of the elite pass rushers in the league. The Bengals will occasionally drop Smith into coverage, but this isn't something that comes natural to him. He is a liability against pass-catching running backs and tight ends, but he is light on his feet when moving in reverse. He can be slow to change directions and will occasionally come out of his stance too upright and expose too much of his chest to opposing blockers. He can also be a bit slow to shed bigger blockers. Smith would have command a lot of attention as an unrestricted free agent, as he has proven to be reliable and tough and is coming off the best season of his career. He isn't a game-changing player, but is an upper-echelon starting defensive end..

What ROTOWORLD.COM says about it:
He never made it to Minneapolis. Smith, the No. 4 pick in 2001, will be used often with his hand up in San Francisco's 3-4, allowing Tully Banta-Cain to be a nickel rusher. He'll also see a good amount of action at end in the Niners' 4-3 fronts. Smith hasn't played linebacker as a pro, but has the motor and athleticism to be effective there. He's a good player who is getting paid to be great

49ers should get a WR in the first round to go along with Bruce. Lelie and Jackson won't get the job done.

So where does Smith play??? He's a bit small for DE in a 3-4 and has never played OLB in a 3-4, kind of a lot of money for a player playing out of position and you don't know what your going to get. I would have rather gotten a DE from the draft or let McDonald, Fields or Oliver (who is roughly the same size as Smith) take the other DE spot. If we are swithing to a 4-3 then this move makes sense with McDonald or Oliver on the other end with Sopoaga and Franklin in the middle, but I doubt a 3-4 Coach, a 3-4 Defensive Coordinator are going to switch to a 4-3.

They should cut DJax to save the cap space. Arnaz Battle needs a bigger role. and we should go after Bernard Berrian in my opinion.
Jackson should be better being used properly, Jackson is the type of reciever that strives in Martz system. Martz likes using crossing routes which is what Jackson does best, Berrian is a stretch the field WR and doesn't go over the middle, I would rather keep Lelie then spend the kind of money Berrian was asking for. Thank goodness another team signed Berrian even though I highly doubt the 49ers were even interested in.

That's a big contract for a player that has never played LB before and wasn't a draft pick. I guess that means we arn't going to have to look at the draft for an OLB at least day 1.
1. Devin Thomas WR
2. Sam Baker OT
3. Heath Benedict OT/OG
4. Frank Okam NT/DE
5. Jonathon Goff ILB/OLB
6. Adrian Arrigton WR
7. Mike Gibson OG
