One for the winos

So, the wife just bought the priciest bottle of wine she will prolly ever buy, a
2003 Screaming Eagle cab for $1,700.

Yeah, like I will ever taste it – it’s a gift from her boss to a client.

But, she did put it on our air miles card. HEH.

Cruised up to Burrell School last weekend with Kevin & Danna and some of their friends. I'll put that Dean's List cab up against the Eagle in a blind test any day that ends in "y." You can get like 6 cases for the price of one bottle. Dolt Wine is right.

Re: One for the winos

So the International Pinot Celebration is this weekend in McMinville, Oregon. You going, Lionel?

We did a little Pinot tasting at the wine bar tonight. The first one we did was 80% Gamay Noir with 20% Pinot Noir from Chehalem
. From the Willamette. Facking great stuff. I don't know how many folks down in CA are doing it, but it's one those varietal that the NW growers are doing lately. There is a trend in the NW wine scene to get the "WTF? They grow THAT here" reaction. Southern Oregon is growing freaking everything. Riojas, Barbera, Sangiovese, Marashal Foch, etc.

Had a great Pinot tonight from New Zealand. Felton Road Winery is in a pretty unique spot geographically. It is almost identical in Southern Latitude to the Oregon/Washington border. So they get the same long day light in the summer and the same crap nasty long winters. This was one of them hearty Pinots. In a blind tasting, I would have guessed it to be a Frenchy. Kinda pricey for a NZ wine (goes for around $50 actually)

If you're looking for cheap Pee-not for everyday drinking, check out the 2006 Erath Pinot Noir. It's available at Costco now for like $12 a bottle.

I worked in Carneros for a couple years and now I'm getting my fill of Willamette wines, but, man, Sonoma county and Paso Robles still kick Napa and Oregon's ass in a serious way. We just added a Grenache from Opolo. The '04. boy, that's a tasty hooch.

IPNC - never made it! I hear it's a great event and I'd love to get your feedback on it.

Re: …

From what I understand, IPNC is like the SXSW of wine shows. It's an industry driven event that average Joe Drinker can't really get into. I'm hoping to try and get to some of the peripheral events this sunday. A lot of the wineries that aren't involved do their own little mini-celebrations. It's also the same weekend as the Oregon Beer Fest on the waterfront, so there is competition.

Re: One for the winos

I was down in Ventura, Santa Barbara and Pismo Beach last week, and had the opportunity to sample and stock up on some of the local wines. It is great Pinot country, and still off the radar for many despite Sideways. I am looking forward to popping this Summerland Pinot:

Sometime in the near future, and I had the pleasure of opening this nice DFV 2005 Claret:

http://www.donatifamilyvineyard.com/learn/wines.php?id=3

I picked up in my travels. It is a very nice blend that has a very rich fruit taste that is very easy drinking, that went well with the Giant comeback last evening. I didn’t have time to stop by the winery LM, or I would have given you a call, but I did find the bottle above in Morro Bay.

I am currently in Sonoma, and had some great success last year doing the Sonoma wineries to the north, with Geyser Peak and Rodney Strong treating me very well, but I am heading over to Napa next week to pick up some big Cabs. I have Sequoia Grove, Heitz, Merryvale and Frank Family on the definite list, and will try to squeeze in Grgich Hills and Silver Oak. Going to try and keep the spending to five or six bills, but we will see how that goes. It is like being a youngster in the toy store.

Nice bump chef.

Winos unite!

Yeah, all those things, responsibility, pressure. It's a bit stressful. I try and come to terms with it by not thinking about it.
