Re: Why is there so much ill feeling from MJ scene at present?
I didn't realise there was so much ill-feeling?? In Scotland it's maybe not so bad (yet)... MJ & WCS seem to be living together harmoniously, for the time-being. We dance WCS at MJ events, but I suppose we are lucky to have some good DJs that cater for all tastes. Most of us really enjoy modern jive as well, it's nice to do both at the same venue, imo. Mind you I haven't been to Southport for years, and I don't read that other forum too often, so maybe living in the dark a bit

It will settle.
A time of change, can only be temporary.
Wonder which way it'll swing though - Independents remains strong and dominant, or Ceroc greedily and manipulitavely chipping away at all the hard work that the independents have created over the past few yrs?

Re: Why is there so much ill feeling from MJ scene at present?
From what I heard about ceroc trying to snap up the entrants of uk wcs champs, and them declining, I doubt very much that they will stamp us out.
PS Why is the word 'c e r o c' always dubbed out as 'ceroc' on this forum?

Re: Why is there so much ill feeling from MJ scene at present?
This ill-feeling is completely unnecessary. I have not experienced much of it and am surprised to read some of the comments on this thread. Surely it can only stem from MJ organisers feeling threatened by WCS, or MJ dancers thinking there is a bit of elitism. I have not witnessed any ill-feeling going the other way, ie from WCS-MJ, certainly not snobbery/elitism at any venues I attend. I hope it sorts itself out, vive la difference!

Re: Why is there so much ill feeling from MJ scene at present?
OK, some interesting stuff fluushing out. Incidently if nayone knows anything about sticky keys and how to turn it off, it would be useful, as the manin menu seems ineffective, (maybe its Samsung laptop thing).
The Big Cheese's outfit is now offering weekend workshops. So they are throwing the net wider to capture WCS dancers or 'coral' the market back under their wing.
But where does this leave their core market and their comfort zone with the sudden offer of US pro teachers?
Will this lead to some hybrid genetically modifed MJ dancer?
Is it any wonder they are confused?

However there was a time a few years back in the south when one of the few places you could learn wcs was at a ceroc venue!!! Before I get asked for where or how what about Surbiton (then Esher) and Farnham. Both these venues were running weekly classes when very few other places offered them (Twickenham included).
Ceroc have consistantly brought over top US Pro's -(I know it was started by Katy but it could have died a death after it was taken over).
MJ is what it is - the vast majority of people want to learn to dance for the social side only - the minority are looking for something more so they branch out and look into different styles and actually learn to lead not just dance (believe me there is a difference). WCS has made a big impression on the MJ scene as so many people have tried it but often stopped as it goes beyong the basic leading (or following) ability that MJ has given them. It requires technique and skill therefore its something to be avoided and many just cannot face the thought of starting again as a beginner they're there to have fun not learn. Thus the ill feeling is springing up.

Great post, agree with last section especially. Also, the difference between a fun night out and learning to dance. I think the complex technique prohibits newcomers a bit, it is a pity that this should create any resentment or ill-feeling however.

Re: Why is there so much ill feeling from MJ scene at present?
Is there really that much ill feeling? There's some people involved looking for it but how much it exists is a matter for conjecture. "The Big Cheese's c*r*c Forum provides a window into the current state of the Modern jive nation." - no it doesn't. It provides an insight into the opinions of a few, highly vocal individuals who MJ, most of whom would start an argument with a mirror in an empty room.
I would guess at Southport there was grumbling about the impromptu DD sets from those who didn't get to hear about them. Probably also moaning about the incompatibility of some people dancing MJ and some dancing WCS in the small area of floor alongside the bar in the blues room but that's a matter of general overcrowding in that room more than anything else.
Other than that you'll see people dancing WCS and MJ quite happily in the same room at Utopia or Twyford and quite probably a number of other venues. An large number of MJers, myself included are trying to learn to dance WCS. Yes, a lot are falling by the wayside for whatever reasons but it still all goes to creating a healthier scene overall. I've been attending weekly WCS classes in Northampton recently - partly because they're run by a mate (in conjunction with Ceroc) but also because it gives me a regular opportunity to practice WCS. I have enjoyed Bisley each time I have been (and I'll continue to go) but Twickenham is too far for me so this is really valuable consolidation.
And though I am not affiliated to ceroc other than being a member and attending some events I have just a couple of questions for Corporal Whip to finish
1 - What's the point of having C e r o c appear as c*r*c on the forum? Petty and needless.
2 - How did it go from being the Big Banana (one of your posts in another thread) to a big cheese (this thread)? The sniping, if there is any, seems to be a two way street.
