Re: WCS - keeping the faith
Thinking about it a bit more...
Buddy Schwimmer (Benji's father) would probably get the credit for being the first WCS teacher in Europe. The usual advice in the late '80s about learning more WCS was to wait until Buddy was over again.
I know he taught in Germany in a ballroom studio, and he also went to the Blackpool Ballroom festival. This would have been before I'd started, so early to mid 80s.

Re: WCS - keeping the faith
Observation from the a e mail diary on events lists a
'West Coast Jive' event.
Is there a way of finding the contents of the workshop?

Re: WCS - keeping the faith
There has been previous discussion on another forum.
I am guessing, but do not know for sure, that the name was chosen by someone at Ceroc London rather than the couple teaching.

Re: WCS - keeping the faith
WCS has been around for decades.
Quite audacious of anyone to 'create' a whole new dance-style, I doubt it will take off because it's too close to WCS but is an inferior version and will just create confusion anyway.

Re: WCS - keeping the faith
Er Ceroc 'created' a new style, as did Leroc. And there's Jango. So not a new concept.

Re: WCS - keeping the faith
OK fair point, but still bold step, and high chance of it flopping.

Re: WCS - keeping the faith
Ahh to see where it all goes if only we had a crystal ball, but there must be some commercial interests along the way. After all it is a business.
Just to re-focus, is the wcs getting a lot more numbers in the last year or so. It certainly appears 'bigger' than it was.
Is this because availability is improving or people are travelling further or other reasons.
Thoughts anyone?

The attendance at Isleworth on Fri testified to the increase in numbers I think.
Many factors at play
1 - The influence of You Tube and seeing the top pro's live at the weekenders, etc. On a lesser scale, seeing the experienced WCS dancers at things like Utopia is undoubtedly encouraging some jivers to seek out WCS classes
2 - Increasing availability of classes - we can argue about the merits of the individual classes but undoubtedly having classes in Nottingham, Northampton, Clapham, Southgate, etc is helping the profile grow (and feeding into the existing infrastructure as attendees at these classes go to Bisley, Twickenham, etc)
3 - Willingness of people to travel. It's around 100 miles each way to Bisley for me but worth it for the chance to be taught by the best (as determined by common consent and trophies) - and there are other people who travel similar (or further) distances for the same reason. I also travel 55 miles each way to the class at Northampton which is much further than I'd usually travel for a midweek class but it needs supporting if it's to flourish and the social time is invaluable for consolidation.
4 - The type of music being played at some events really sits well with WCS. Whether this is encouraging people to take it up or if it's just a natural follow on of DJs catering for the existing WCS dancers there is arguable.
