Re: WCS - keeping the faith
Meanwhile I get the impression all of this is slowly coming into reality.
One has to look around to see all sorts of strange teachers and classes popping up eluding to WCS style etc.
The good side is it exposes the name, the style and hopefully sends a few more dancers into the scene.

Re: WCS - keeping the faith
Yes I think it is.
2008 looks like it was going to be a pivotal year.
2007 ended a bit shakey with Cat & Paul, no longer teaching at Jive Bug's Bisley.
All looked pretty gloomy, but like a phoenix from the ashes it re-emerged.
However 2007, saw the arrival in the Uk or Robert& Nichola Royston, which was great.
Jordan & Tatiana, Kyle & Sarah over with regularity, and of course the legendary Robert Cordoba & Deborah Szekey come and support whatever they can.
We even saw the amzing Michael Kielbas in 2007, who is a complete gentleman.
Heidi & Benji...I guess Pontins was bit of a culture shock for them, as it was to all of us the first time we ever went (i.e.Camber). Lucky it was Southport and one of the better venues!
Cat appears to be all over the UK launching new workshops and working with Jive Addiction.
Cat has appointed a number of teachers who are doing well throughout the UK. There remains talk of a WCS teaching qualification and I expect this is proving difficult in time, resource and curriculum to get developed, approved etc.
Meanwhile huge amounts of interest in the US scene, there appears to be an initial frenzy to get to Swing Diego. Estimates currently at 30 people from the UK going at the moment, excluding Cat & Paul, who are committed to the hilt.
The net result is a 'swing' towards WCS its influence in music, MJ are to be seen every night on the floor.
So all in all quite positive at the moment.

Re: WCS - keeping the faith
Here we go then shooting from the hip!
Excellent to see Marilene @ JiveBug bring Lee Easton and the amazin' Syd' to her Sunday workshop. Lee remains a 'purest' very centered on good technique, bless hi cotton sox. He brings new perspective and influence to the scene and went all b**ls out to being us a WCS event in Brean. He has just announced Blackpool later in the year with some US pro's.
Paul Buckley @ New Lodge & the WCS hardcore co-operative bring ad hoc social dances at the wonderful Maidenhead location. Paul & Sue really warm friendly people, making up some of the hardcore, making it happen, in a total non profit and unselfish manner.
Long may it continue and be oversubcribed.
Paul always makes newbies welcome but please, but bear in mind, it is a social co-operative, with very limited space so if you book, its best to show up.
Cat & Paul, launch Captial Swing as a joint venture, Sunday workshops ++ out Windsor, Reading way. Wish them well with this. They are also making in roads into the US competition scene, winning 2 categories at Capital Swing. Congrats' they looking great for Swing Diego. Nice to see them come out with everyone else.
Cat & Paul doing quite a lot of privates at the moment as well. Suggest only, if you have 9 months plus regular experience under your belt its a great time to jump in and get some in, if possible.
It appears a huge posse of dancers heading for Swing Diego in a few weeks. Parker is in for quite shock when we all bowel up!
Meanwhile WSM UK WCS Champs' end of this week. Jive Addiction providing the support, Kyle & Sarah & the Roystons. Quite a line up.
Of course the Belgians and French invade this year together. Lets say the gloves are off & we want to hang the union jacks over all the competitions this year! There will be a few surprises, disappointments, and no brainers. (Some I know have already had to pull out of the classic for many reasons, including injuries).
To look out for Naomi (line), Carron D, Sheila (Spikey B), Rachel Mart', Rob B(line /street jazz dancer), Glenn, Kevin, Paul Buckley, Simon, Paul.
This is meant to be fun, and its not an the end if you do not get placed . On average, except for spotlight you may get 3 -12 seconds of judges time, so you may not get what might be considered a huge opportunity to demonstrate competence.
At novice level, if your basics are not good do not expect to get through and please consider in J & J, you are judged individually in the qualifers and as a couple in the semi's and finals. Therefore it must be a joint effort and a communicated dance.
Enjoy.
Observation on the scene at the moment. there is a lot of basic technique that needs sharpening up particulalry from the 'newbies' in the last 12 months. Lead -Whips that are just not at all correct, basics with no triple steps at all. (if its good enough for Jordan, Tat, Kyle, Sarah..etc).
Follows: turning with improper cross overs? Simply sinking in on 6 and sticking the butt out on 6&, waiting for 1, is not WCS. Sorry!
Hyper extension throughout the dance.
Leads, the crank and yank merchants risking injury to the follows & always at hyper extension, which knocks onto the follows.
WCS looks good for a reason, really solid basics.
Time for some self critique or ask someone that can help?

Hmm, you clearly have some people in mind in this post CW. I don't know who it's aimed at and if I did I may agree or I may disagree with your observation. What I do know is that it comes across, whether intended that way or not, as quite condescending and that you feel very superior to these people. Since you have posted elsewhere about how you revisit your basics quite often I am guessing that's probably not what you intended but it reads that way to me. It's also quite brave to talk of 'Whips that are just not at all correct' given how many different interpretations I have heard of how a whip should be lead by different teachers, all of whom I (and I am sure you) would respect.
Moving away from that specific quote and onto the scene generally I see grounds for optimism and some grounds for pessimism.
Lee was brave with Brean and got his reward. Blackpool is braver still being so much further than Brean from the South East which is still the heartland of UK WCS. Trent Park classes folded but it's hopeful he will find another venue in or around that area.
Haven't been to a Paul/Cat workshop yet this year for various reasons but have heard good things and numbers seem to be holding up well other than the one which was scheduled on the same weekend as Brean unsurprisingly.
Big respect to Paul Buckley for his efforts with New Lodge and the coup in getting Mario across.
My local(ish) class at Northampton has dwindled for a variety of reasons but some other things are taking off locally and I wish them well. Social practice (in addition to not instead of good tuition) is essential to development in dancing WCS and if people lose these opportunities within reasonable travelling distance then the scene as a whole loses out.
Really looking forward to Weston this weekend. Having fun will be first on the agenda but I do plan to compete and I hope to do well (no point in entering otherwise in my view) I think Steve is someone to look out for that you missed from your list CW.
