I have 2 pairs- dance sneakers and also leather soles (heel-less) dance shoes. Prefer the latter for wcs.

Re: Dance shoes - Corporal Whip reveals all
Time to expose my wardrobe, currently yes 2 pairs of latin tangos. They are both Freed, one is the lycra canvas, the other leather with 1.5" Cuban heels.
Both sport suede soles, no support.
Verdict: Absolutely fantastic, hard work after 4 hours workshop.
Would I ever use sneakers again: Never.
MJ I use a pair of the Werner Kern, suede soles, lovely quality, really great to faltish heels like 10 mm.

Re: Dance shoes
Still in sneakers, looking to trade (if I become serious about west coast swing). Everyone says it's difficult in anthing but a hard-soled shoe.

Re: Dance shoes
Whats that, i think you'll find everyone says it difficult in hard soles.
Trust me soft suede soles with as much feel as possible is the only way for wcs. It allows the foot to roll propoerly, see the discussion on weighting and foot presses etc.
Look at the Freed latin practice with Cuban heels

Re: Dance shoes
A lot depends on how much you want to spend. Not on the shoes, but on your podiatrist in a few years time.
Mine used to work occasionally for the Royal Ballet. He was pretty critical of just about all the dance shoes he had seen.
- Suede soles were a must.
- Shankless shoes, such as split soled trainers or some cuban heels, should only be worn for short periods if you didn't have exceptionally strong feet (eg from years of ballet, jazz, gymnastics or martial arts)
- Thin soles, especially ones that were flexible, caused problems with the sole of the feet.
- Lack of arch support was almost criminal.
He recommended getting a good quality sports insole that had arch support, cushioning for the sole, and shock-absorbing for the heel. Get the insoles before the shoes, and put them in when trying them on. For the actual shoes he suggested normal trainers with suede soles stuck on.
At the moment I wear a pair of dance sneakers with stuck-on suede soles, and a semi-rigid moulded sports insole. Not exactly what he suggested, but the problem is getting trainers with a flattish sole to stick the suede on.
The alternative would be to get like I was before I saw him - unable to walk in bare feet for more than a minute.
