There is a peculiar situation in the UK where a lot of people have started WCS in the last 3 years, having had a background in Modern Jive. The teachers play slower music to give people a chance to do the footwork. But people seem to assume that this is the normal music, and you can't dance to anything faster.

That's interesting, I never see anyone in UK dancing WCS particularly fast, and this explains it. I have been taught that wcs 'loses' the triple steps as the tempo picks up, and many of the online clips and dvds that I have watched show this. So as a relative novice, should I be thinking about picking up the pace now, after a good 6-8months of classes? I guess so.

Yes- you should move up to faster tempos as soon as you can, especially if you have mastered the basic footwork. emoticon

Makes the brain work quicker, helps you dancing as a whole.

You have to be good to carry it off with low BPM (imo). We get away with more when it's quick!

Well, in case you are wondering, here's an angle.
Strictly speaking the triple step is not lost.
It becomes a lot smaller and subtle, to allow it to be quicker.
Also the triple step is about two elements:
1 It keeps the timing on the 6 & 8 logic
2 It facilitates weight changes

If you ain't changing weight on your feet they cannot move.
Hope this helps clarify.

Or it changes to a tap step? Advanced WCSers seem to go into double or single time when the tempo hots up!

Dancing to the "fast" WCS is just all a matter of practice. When I first started dancing WCS seriously, I had a hard time with music over 100 bpm....but now I find that my favorite tempo's are between 110 and 120.

We also do a lot of dancing in blues bars here in town....you don't have control over the music, so you learn to dance to whatever comes on. On our regular friday night dances, the music is regulated so we don't blow all the newbies out of the water with the fast songs.

And yes, you can cut out some of the triples, but I'm a big believer that the triples are what makes it look like a WCS swing. I don't find it particularly appealing when I watch even high level dancers going step-step-step-step....all the way through a dance. That's boring!

I agree that glossing over triples loses the 'look' a bit. However it's nice to vary it, maybe sometimes tap-step, or other non-stepping variations like hip rolls/swivels. Beginners tend to stomp a bit, lifting their feet off the floor too high, so that's something to work on in the early days.
