Video-ing teachers
I don't know about you, but I get really p*ssed off at dance weekends when we are banned from filming either classes or demos. I know the reasons why teachers want to keep their material to themselves, but to me it would be such a MASSIVE bonus to be able to go home with a video diary of the weekend. Written notes = poor good reflection on what you did/saw, I wish that more teachers would share their stuff

Re: Video-ing teachers
Understand your frustration my friend, which is why I buy DVD'S. However, at Bisley/Putney WCS workshops I've attended in the past, there has been no objection to videoing. In fact they go out of their way to perform routines at the end of the day to be recorded by those who wish to.
Some dance weekends sell DVD's of the weekend workshops too.

That's nice to hear. I agree, all the workshops I have been to have not objected to the filming of the class, and teachers usually demo it for you at the end.
But if you splash out & buy a dvd then it is much better footage usually and if it's a teaching dvd they'll break down the steps. e.g. Southport had all the lessons filmed.

Re: Video-ing teachers
We shouldn't expect teachers to allow video-ing of them dancing either a class routine or an evening demo. Although it can be irritating, there is a lot of plaigarism out there so they need to protect the material they have worked hard to compile. So there.

That is SO true.
I have bought in the past a few excellent DVDs. But not so many recently because there is just so much stuff on youtube, well cabaret-wise perhaps, not very many decent teaching clips. In fact there are a few apauling ones.

Def.
Seems to be more of an issue in lindy hop than WCS from what I've experienced.
Also, with websites such as YouTube being so popular, you never know who will see it, and if you're not dancing your best then it could seriously damage your reputation!

Re: Video-ing teachers
It is usually the organiser of the weekender that sets the video policy. On some of the smaller weekenders the sales of the video can make the difference between a profit and a loss (and hence another weekender next year.)
Most teachers aren't too worried about protecting what they are teaching. If they were then they shouldn't teach it. Some are protective about their cabaret or even freestyle moves, but that is their choice.
There are full time professional dancers who make some of their living from selling videos. I can see no justification for depriving them of income.
I personally don't like my classes being filmed. I find it too disruptive. However I don't mind doing a short recap at the end if there is time and there is no official video available.
Same with our cabarets - you can video them if you want. You can pinch any of our moves as well, if you can do them.
Having said that, I would be tempted to only allow videoing on the condition it is only for pesonal use. ie not for commercial gain, and not for broadcast on TV or the Internet.

Iy probably is for commercial use 95% of the time, but then if it's put onto youtube, anyone can see/use it...... Hard to control what people do with it, and I know of a london Jango teacher who had his stuff put online without consent. From what I understand the law says that the video-taker has all the rights, and not the subject matter!

Commercial use should be agreed with the dancers. If it is a competition, then you sign a disclaimer regarding the videoing. At weekenders the videoing is by prior arrangement between the organisers and the teachers. I have no problem with this.
Most of the video footage of dancing is done privately, and only seen by the camerman and friends (which probably includes the dancers). Again I have no problem with this, and have videoed several dancers myself on this basis.
What I would object to is someone making money by selling videos of the 'after class recaps' or cabaret performances without the agreement of the dancers, and compensation to them.

The dancer has the right to stop people videoing him, or to only allow videoing under cetain conditions.
If he performs without agreeing any conditions, then the video-taker has all the rights to the video.
At least it doesn't worry me any more. I haven't done a cabaret for 2 years, or taught for nearly a year, and I don't see this changing.

I meant to say " It's probably NOT for commercial use....."
And I am agreeing with you....
