The Ghost in the Cafe
It's taken me a long time to pluck up the courage to post this . So, honest opinions, please? Is this totally sucky?
I own nothing in the HP universe, it all belongs to JKR. I'm only playing with her characters, although I think I might keep Severus, I'll treat him better than she did!!
Warnings: None, it's all good clean fun and totally AU.
Rating: FRC – it wouldn't make your granny blush.
Pairing: SS/HG
The Ghost In The Café
The bushy haired young woman sat at a table near the back of the coffee shop. She placed her order and continued to read her book. In the hustle and bustle of the shop, she picked up snippets of conversations, but no-one noticed her and she preferred it that way.
She looked up briefly when the waiter brought her black coffee, but otherwise remained engrossed in her reading.
As she stirred her coffee her thoughts drifted to her friends, most of them were dead now, lost in the final battle giving their lives for the greater good. She thought about him in particular – her lover, they had found comfort in each other amidst the loss of so many friends and fellow Order members. She had tried to save him from the killing curse, but she had been a fraction of a second too late. She remembered holding his lifeless body as time seemed to stand still.
A voice drifted into her sub-consciousness, "Do you mind if I share your table, there doesn't appear to be any other spaces?"
She inclined her head without looking up, "Be my guest."
There was something about that voice, something oddly familiar, but it couldn't be, he was dead after all.
She risked a sideways glance as the man sat down opposite her. The sight that greeted her froze her in place momentarily. "No, it's impossible, you're dead."
The dark man raised one eyebrow, "Hello Miss Granger."
"Severus? How? What?"
Severus smirked at his companion, "I never thought I would ever see the day you would be rendered speechless Hermione."
Hermione's breath hitched as she whispered, "I saw you die."
"Hmmmm." He murmured reaching across and taking a sip of Hermione's coffee. "You really shouldn't add so much sugar, it impairs the bitterness of the blend."
Hermione frowned, "I saw you die" she repeated firmly.
Severus shook his head, "What is the matter Hermione? After all the years you spent at Hogwarts, I wouldn't think you would have a problem believing in ghosts."
Hermione took a steadying breath and reached across the table, hesitantly she touched a finger to Severus's hand, it felt warm and solid. "If you are a ghost, how can I touch you?"
Severus sighed, "They said you would say that."
At Hermione's questioning look Severus continued, "The others …. You don't remember what happened do you?"
Hermione shook her head slowly, "I tried to save you, but I couldn't save anyone. There were too many Death Eaters, they surrounded us. I couldn't …. The pain ….. and then I didn't feel anything anymore.
Before she knew it, Severus was crouched at her side, a comforting arm draped around her shoulder. "It's all right Hermione, it took me a few days to realise I was dead too."
"What?" Hermione stared at Severus dumbstruck. As the implications of his words set in she laughed quietly. "Is this some kind of joke? You don't really expect me to believe …." She paused and then continued in a whisper, "that I'm dead too."
Severus eyed her for a moment debating whether to tell Hermione the whole story. As it was, circumstances overtook him. Hermione shivered, a sudden look of realisation and horror crossed her features. Severus pulled her into a gentle hug. "They tell me the moment of realisation is always very difficult."
Hermione nodded slowly, her eyes unseeing as images flashed before her.
Severus struck down by Voldemort's killing curse, Hermione cradling his still form.
Suddenly, out of the haze another memory surfaced, one she didn't recognise.
Lucius Malfoy approaching from behind, his wand pointing menacingly at Hermione's back. A green flash of light and then nothing.
"Lucius Malfoy". She whispered.
Severus nodded, "I think it's time to go home." He gestured towards the door.
Hermione turned, there in front of her were Remus Lupin, Tonks and a handful of other Order Members.
Suddenly, it all felt so right. Hermione stood and clutched Severus's hand for a moment. Yes, it was time to go. She hugged Remus and Tonks.
"Welcome back Hermione", Remus said with a grin.
Hermione turned to Severus, with a wicked gleam in her eye she stood on tiptoe, her lips close to his ear, "Do you think you can put up with the Gryffindor know-it-all for all eternity?"
Severus smirked as his arm snaked around her waist, "I think there might be a ghost of a chance."
