Operation Endgame- FINISHED NOV.5th StarTreker

Operation Endgame
Written by: startreker

The irony of the idea of trying to end the war on the 100th anniversary of the day fire rained from the sky is not lost on me as I sit here writing this, what is probably my last report. My name is Lt. David Briggam I am the flight lead for the 143 Wyvern flight. I sit here in my cold room on board the Pillar of Wrath and all I can think of doing on my last night alive is to write down the events that have led me to this moment in my life in hopes that they will be found by someone willing to let the truth out, god knows the admiralty will cover up why we died because they believe that there is no way the populace can understand how close they and their families came to being wiped out. Well I guess it is best to start from the beginning with a brief history lesson so pay attention I will only have time for a quick run down.
It all started on July 26th 2152, the day actually began quite normal, people going about their lives going to work and school dreaming of this new world that they would be part of. On earth things had never been better nanotechnology had changed the world just as it had promised new crops had eliminated hunger, wealth as it was known throughout much of history had been removed by the fact that everyone now had access to what they needed at prices all could afford so soon the idea of a monetary system became outdated. As to rule after many years of war our ancestors finally got it right; when they were threatened by a comet coming at earth they banded together to stop all of their destructions this single event eventually led to a world wide democracy much like the ancient United Nations only this one actually worked. However all of this is taught to fifth graders in world history the truth is it all became obsolete at 0920 hours. At first no one knew what was happening, the first shots hit London and before anyone could react millions were dead and all major military instillations and many major cities in the country laid in ruins all from blasts of green energy flung from space. The joint European nations, the JEN, were the next to go and with the destruction of Berlin we lost the S.H.I.E.L.D laser defense system over Europe. By now the world knew it was under attack. Asia was the first to respond satellites were turned around and what they saw was incredible a huge obelisk shaped vessel was in orbit however perhaps more shocking all this destruction was not caused by a fleet but by one single ship. However before they could respond the vessel began to fire on Beijing and tuned it to glass but not before possibly the most important data transmission in history was sent from Beijing to Washington. This signal had the exact coordinates of the ship that was attacking Earth. In the United States computers fired up, phones rang off the hooks, and the department of space defense was assembled in record time. It was decided that they needed to use the Zeus cannon. This weapon was secretly put into orbit several years earlier incase of another world war. It was a charged ion cannon of a scale the world had never seen, and most importantly it was hidden in what looked like a standard communications satellite. Knowing they would only have one shot the commanders waited even as Hawaii was leveled they waited until the ship got over the western seaboard of the United States then they fired from behind the Hostile ship. These aliens who thought they had planned for everything had not counted on being out maneuvered by a species that didn’t even have space ships. The blast ripped right through their hull and by the luck of whatever deity you worship hit their Communications array just before their power plant. So as their ship blew up around them they tried to call for help but it fell on deaf ears. Well now you know the true story behind how Earth was saved it wasn’t because of great planning or execution but rather by the shear luck of a poor design putting the Communications array near the reactor. I often wonder what would have happened had that subspace signal gone off and more of those ships appeared. However the world now had wounds to lick, the death toll was a staggering 100 million dead and almost 200 million injured. However it was only a few more days before the last science stations told everyone the news that they didn’t want to hear. The ship did get off one signal it was using a back up real-space antenna and was aimed at the Andromeda galaxy. In just 10 years the signal would arrive and reinforcements would be sent. The message was clear Earth had only 10 years to prepare to fight for its very survival.

***to be continued***
Rest of the story......Nov. 5th, 2007

Well now you know exactly as much as humanity did 7 days after the end day as it would come to be called. Well it didn’t take our scientists very long at all after examining the alien vessel to see just how out matched humanity was.
The first probing groups into the alien vessel were able to understand the computer system relays which was the biggest surprise; at the time no one knew how it was possible but the screens were defiantly displaying old English. It was the type Shakespeare would have been comfortable with but none the less they could understand what it was saying. This is when humanity first learned the name of the species that had murdered so many in cold blood, humanities biggest threat ever had come from a species called the Torians, apparently from their records they had been one of 13 original sentient species at the dawn of the galaxy. However perhaps more shocking was the name of one of the other worlds on the list of 13, Earth. Reading on the team discovered a wealth of knowledge about a time when most on Earth were just starting to come together to form civilization, apparently the legends of Atlantis had been right but its fate had been falsified. You see this species calling itself the Caltana, or the children of Earth, had actually left the world on the ships belonging to a group known only as the ancient ones. Apparently this group of humans had the ability to use all of their brains instead of just a small portion like most and thus……
“David what are you doing?” I turned to see the typical glowing blue eyes of my Caltana wingman Duvias. “Duvias” David said “what the hell are you doing here I thought you were meditating to prepare for tomorrows battle”
“What am I doing David” said Duvias “if I am not mistaken your species still requires a full 8 hours of sleep to perform at peak levels and I cannot have you operating at less than peak tomorrow”
The two veterans looked at each other for a few seconds before bursting out laughing.
“But honestly David what are you doing in your room tonight shouldn’t you be out celebrating the end to the war with your friends?”
“Sorry man but I have to get this written and pray that why we are doing this can eventually get out”
“Let me take a look”

Duvias scans the computer screen for a few moments taking it all in then speaks.
“Wow talk about only one point of view no offense but I think that as commander of the Caltana flight that will be taking part in the strike I would be more able to fill in the gap between the attack on your world and the founding of the great alliance I mean after all I was there”
“You’re probably right old friend the computer is yours I need to go get something to eat anyway be right back”

What David was describing is what my people call the great exodus. Upon seeing just how much faster we were evolving and not wanting to inter fear with the rest of humanities evolution, my ancestors used a subspace relay to contact a passing spacecraft only 2 parsecs away. It was from them that my ancestors learned of the 13 original species. Apparently in the beginning only 13 worlds had sentient life on them and thus all the hundreds of worlds that now have life were at one time colonized by those 13. Well given this isn’t a history paper I will only say that over thousands of years my ancestors now calling themselves the Caltana, which in our language means the children of Earth, developed into a species that was among the most technologically advanced in the galaxy. Only the mighty Gumar rivaled my ancestors. Now for the better part of 1000 years peace reined in the galaxy, the ruling council offered equal voice to all species that had developed hyperspace travel. However the council was growing old and many of its original 13 guardians had become pacifist and dismantled their fleets.
Now on to the attack on Earth, that was the spark that started everything. The truth was the intelligence network in the galaxy new about the result within minutes and only days later word reached the council chambers. There was outrage. It was the highest law of the counsel that no member of the council would have any contact with worlds that had yet to discover hyperspace travel. My people took it as a personal attack against us because those were truly our people on that planet just slightly less evolved. It was at that moment history tells us that the counsel dissolved, the representative from the Trodarin federation came down with the Torians, big surprise everyone knew they were just puppets anyway. Luckily the Reveans came down on our side and vowed to fight as our allies. It wasn’t long after that fateful meeting that the great Caltana fleet was brought back together from the far reaches of the galaxy. However none could have seen the next turn of events. Only three Earth days’ later one hundred Gumar warships dropped out of hyperspace in one of the outlying Caltana systems, and promptly crushed the task force stationed there. Word spread like wildfire up the chain of command, the Gumar had joined the Torians in battle. It was quickly figured out that even the Caltana fleet could not stand against this triple threat so it was decided to abandon our home world. It was a hard decision but the populace was placed onto ships and evacuated towards an area of space known as ‘no man’s land’ where massive plasma storms made scanning impossible but on the way the fleet stopped by a ravaged world to collect some old relatives.
“How’s it coming Duvias?”
“Not bad Davis I just got done telling the story of how my people were forced to leave our home world”
“Nice I hope whoever reads this doesn’t fall asleep”
“I don’t think the history of how my people lost their home is so boring Davis”
“It was a joke Duvias, if we live through this I really need to teach you a since of humor”
“If we live I might take you up on that offer. Goodnight Davis I need to report to my flight to prepare them for tomorrow, some of the junior pilots are quite scared”
“The same with mine, goodnight Duvias”
Davis sat down and returned to his paper.

Back on Earth humanity was trying our best to come up with some sort of plan to counter this coming threat, oblivious to the sheer scale of the war we were now in the middle of. The first thing we did was to reactivate the space fleet used in the Earth/Mars wars from 10 years earlier. All in all Earth’s fleet consisted of 2 carriers 10 battleships and numerous support ships like frigates and gunships. However none of them had anywhere near the technology of the ship that had attacked Earth. For testing purposes hull plates were taken from the wreckage of the enemy ship and we fired our best shots at them, not so much as on scratch. The alloy they were created out of was beyond out best metallurgical analysis, we couldn’t even grasp how it was created let alone how to destroy it.
A few days after the weapons test our long range sensors detected the same space anomaly that preceded the enemy vessel. Our ships went to full battle readiness prepared to try their best to stop the enemy, what happened next was incomprehensible. Over 1000 ships of unknown type appeared but none had weapons powered up and the lead ship sent a transmission asking to meet with our fleet’s leader. The conversation that followed was almost beyond belief, as our admiral sat there and listened he heard amazing things both the history of our peoples and the war that had now begun. But more than that these people were offering us a chance to live but to take it we would have to leave Earth.
The decision was passed along to Earths leaders and finally it was decided to give the population a choice to go with these new strangers or to remain behind. Almost everyone chose to bored the alien transports and head off to the unknown.
The trip took almost three months even with this new hyperspace technology but finally we reached our destination. The vesicles all raised their shields and tuned them to a preset frequency to allow passage though the huge plasma storms that existed all around the star system. What my people saw on the other side was a feat never before dreamed of, a man made solar system.
There were three planets all in a circular orbit around the star at exactly the right distance to make life as good as possible, but it was the star bases that were awe inspiring. There were mourning spots at stations for over 4000 capital ships and almost 400 dry-docks for the creation of new ships and for major repairs. On the planets it was almost as amazing. There were already cities there and factories to produce the weapons of war. Not to mention the facilities to train officer and enlisted personal. It was obvious that this place was created for one reason, to turn a peaceful population into the greatest military force in the galaxy. It was explained that this place was created by the first ones as a last safe haven if war should break out in the galaxy; a place where they could go to prepare to strike back.
Over the next several years’ things moved at breakneck speed. All existing Earth ships were fitted with technology to bring them up to the level of our new allies. New shields to protect the crews, hyperspace generators to travel, and new antimatter based weapons. Also many more species were enlisted and told to wait until the time was right to retake what was ours, and all the time ships were coming off the lines and new crews trained for them. Meanwhile the alliance of our enemies, now calling itself collectively the Dravari, which in the ancient tongue means the destroyers, was growing ever ****ier. They had encountered no serious resistance and believed that they were going to easily walk over the galaxy. Little did they know that the reason behind the ease of their campaign was that all those who could have stood against them had fallen back to mass their forces.

It was during this time of preparation that I grew up and chose my path. When I was 18 it was time for me to make a decision I could either go enlisted or officer given everyone was required to join the ever growing military. I, being a hot shot kid, chose to train to become a pilot in the Raptor interceptor squadrons. I graduated head of my class at the pilot school and was assigned to Wyvern squadron right after graduation. The training and mock battles were intense, our new allies the Caltana had been in battle before and thus were training us to fight a real war. We spent 8 hours a day 5 days a week in the ****pit of a fighter learning every possible maneuver. However we did get 2 days off per week that we took advantage of to finally get some needed R&R. Usually this consisted of going to a bar and starting a fight with the other squadrons however it was on one of these weekends that we got the message all of us had been waiting for, the war was starting.
We were called up and told to report to our base ships and the message ended with “This is not a drill, let’s go get some.” We rushed to our ships I was on the Wrath of Autumn with the rest of my squadron, all of us were anxious to get into the fight against those that had killed so many. Our ship left the ion cloud and what we saw took our breath away, there were ships as far as the eye could see, from every corner of the galaxy this fleet had been assembled to challenge the new ruling power in the galaxy. It was decided that this first attack would be to scare our new foes so no landing was planned however we still had the coordinates of the planet where this had started and that was where we would begin, Earth.
I wish I had been able to see the look on their faces when our fleet arrived and dropped out of hyperspace. There were almost 1,000 alliance ships that came with us into battle. I still remember the loud speaker in the hanger screaming at us to get to the fighters. We locked in and got placed on the catapults to be delivered into battle. By the time that Wyvern was launched the battle was already underway. The enemy had more vessels than we had originally counted on and what was supposed to be a quick raid turned into a slug fest between two giant fleets but we were ready. Our gunners knew where to hit the enemy ships and our pilots had memorized all the data we had on the enemy fighters. However it still wasn’t an easy victory, when all was said and done we had lost 542 warships. However the enemy’s losses numbered well over 1000 warships and the damage to their moral was immeasurable.
Word was quickly spread to the Triad and from what we heard the actually shot the person that reported the losses to them. The Dravari were caught completely by surprise, in one fell swoop across the front they had lost 4 main battle fleets, and more than that people on all the occupied worlds quickly learned of the success and the message was clear, the Dravari could be beaten.
When my fleet came back from our battle we were treated as heroes and saviors. It was a lot for a 25 year old pilot to take in, just the scale of what had just happened took almost a full day for me to realize. However it was when I got down to the planet that I truly had my life change. I met a girl, I knew I shouldn’t get evolved with someone; not with how dangerous my career was but I couldn’t help myself.
Due to or success Wyvern squadron was given the week off and I spent it getting to know this new girl I had met. Her name was Rebecca and I will never forget that all my friends gave her crap for her fire red hair. Apparently she was a weapons officer on the Carrier Terran Wrath, our latest and most powerful carrier, and was a fellow child born in this new solar system. I swear everything moves faster during war because we started the week with coffee and by the end we had to force ourselves to get out of bed with the other one. However we both swore we would get married after the war was over.
The next several months were incredible our fleet won battle after battle and liberated whole systems from the Dravari. I had made a new friend with a Caltana pilot in my squadron named Duvias who, although needing a sense of humor badly, was as kindred a spirit as I have ever found. Also whenever I was back home I would spend all my leave with Rebecca talking about our future, I should have known that nothing this good could end well.
The battle or Andaruna was what it would be called, however for those of us there it was the point where we realized just how little we truly new of war. We had received intelligence that the entire ruling council of the Dravari would be overseeing the creation of the largest fleet ever, a fleet designed to find and wipe our alliance out once and for all. This was an opportunity we couldn’t pass up, if we took out the council the war would be over, the Dravari would collapse. We massed every ship in the area, a total of almost 2000 vessels, and moved to the Andaruna system to engage the enemy. The battle started well we were making solid progress thrashing their ships as always but then all at once everything changed. From hyperspace over 3,000 Dravari ships including the council flagship dropped in on our flank and proceeded to rip us apart. It was obvious that the technology of that flagship was far beyond anything before it. Our weapons harmlessly hit their shields and their cannons tore whole chunks out of our best vessels.
Only 500 ships managed to escape that ambush, we lost the Wrath of Autumn and my flight was only saved because we were picked up by another carrier, ironically it was the Terran Wrath. We thought our spirit couldn’t get more broken until we returned home and learned from our spies that our worst fear had happened, the Dravari had recovered one of our computers and from it gained the frequency to pass through the plasma storms, and we knew that huge fleet that just crushed us would be coming for our homes now.
Well you now know why it is I sit aboard one of the last 1,000 ships we have prepared to go off and die to try to end this war. Here is how it comes down, one way or the other this war is over, either we find a miracle way to destroy that flagship or we die trying.

This is Duvias and I think it is only right that I finish the story and write down the reason we are free now and why it is that my good friend Davis cannot write the ending to his own log.
The battle was not going well we had lost half the capital ships and over three quarters of the fighters and the enemy fleet was still mostly intact. It was then that we got lucky, a disabled gunship managed to ram the enemy’s flagship and blow a whole clean through the enemy’s hull. Unfortunately not one ship was in position to capitalize. It was then I heard a message come over the squadron radio, it was from Davis and I think his message said it all. “This is Davis to all members of Wyvern flight, you have been the single best group of men that I could have ever hoped to serve with but now I see that this is my time to end this war. Thank you all for giving me the chance to go on one last foolish mission, and Duvias tell Rebecca I am sorry.” I remember looking out my window and seeing one Raptor fighter streak into the breach into the enemy’s hull, seconds later explosions ripped through their ship and in the great silence of space the ship was destroyed and the battle was over. All of the enemy ships stood down knowing that without this new super ship they stood no real chance and they had no reason to continue the killing now that all their leaders were dead.
So on the 100th anniversary of the day Earth came under attack from space and so many died we now had ever more heroes to morn but all most people thought of was the new life they had now to live.
However I now have one question that I would like everyone to contemplate as I recount this tale. What is the cost of peace? How much are we truly willing to pay to go home to a safe place at night? The truth is that far too often we forget just what peace and safety cost those who earn it. For on that night people of all races were celebrating the liberation of the galaxy, celebrating the new freedom they had to live their lives. Yet what was too easily forgotten was that on one world deep in the heart of this new republic a red haired girl stood on a balcony with tears streaming down her face asking why it had to be the man she loved that had volunteered to go on that mission. Too often we forget that real life isn’t some holobook and not everyone lives happily ever after when the curtain closes on the villain. So here on this balcony one girl stands alone trying to think of what her place in this new world could be, one girl with tears in her eyes climbs up on the rail of a balcony. In the end, on a balcony at the top of a thirty story building a woman decides the cost was too great, and on the sidewalk 30 stories below that balcony the war to save the galaxy at last claims its final casualty.
I was there when we laid her body to rest next to the empty grave of my friend. I found out when I got home that there was a message he had sent to me in secret. It read as follows.
“I feel as though this coming battle will claim my life, and that doesn’t scare me perhaps my death will yet have meaning; I only wish I could be there to grow old with Rebecca. Though I don’t have much time I ask that you do me one last favor. Don’t let anyone forget that no matter what happens tomorrow, many more brave souls died so that we could have even the chance to live. It is my great dream that even as time passes, people not forget those who died to usher in this new world.”
And so to this day I still serve as a professor at the academy teaching all new officers about the many who died in that war before the final battle.

The End

Nice beginning not sure I'd do first person for the whole thing though its a nice way to start a story but can be hard to make a story interesting only hearing from one person on one side. But it has worked in some area's. Star Wars I, Jedi by Micheal Stackpole is a great example of first person story telling.

Another issue it might be helpful to use some paragraphs just to space it out some.

I trust in not having misunderstood ,.... But not being in separate paragraphs, it is almost impossible to translate......

Thank you for the feed back! (that is my son BTW)
He said, he'd take your suggestions Ryan and Mariel...I mentioned that he needed to break it up in to more paragraphs, so he now understands another reason why..
That's why I had you read them RYAN......as he says' your writing is amazing, so I had him add his story here, knowing you'd give an honest opinion. emoticon
Thank you BOTH! emoticon

lol
so far I'm about half way through the new section.

Its good so far, the spacing makes it hard to read, but some of that could just be because of the board.
