Re: Queeny's Summer Trip 2008
Yesterday, May 15th....when Hubby got off work we drove about half an hour to GEORGETOWN, CO......It's nothing more than a small, barely making it, town with a long Silver mining history. But to me it was a 'MUST SEE'....Those of you who've known me for any length of time, know that I'm a HUGE John Denver fan. Well, one of my favorite Christmas Movies has been, "THE CHRISTMAS WISH".....starring John Denver. It was filmed in Georgetown, and I've always wanted to see it...it's very run down.....and NO WHERE (this was very sad to me) was there any plaque or mention of John and/or the Movie....
So here is 1.) the movie and description and 2.) My pictures taken yesterday.
About the movie...
quote: The joy and tragedy of the Christmas Season lies in the fact that it mostly revolves around family. That is why some people call it "the children's holiday." As we age, natural attrition and progress removes the people and the things that gave us our special memories. John Denver, in one of his sweetest roles, plays George Billings, a successful NYC architect and new widower who lost his wife about a year earlier. His life is focused around his 9 year old daughter, Alex; both are still grieving their loss. George is trying his best to make this a special Christmas for his daughter. Enter his boss, Thomas Renfield (roguishly played by the wonderful Col. Flagg of M*A*S*H guy, Edward Winters), who sends George to Georgetown, CO to explore a possible real estate deal. Lying to his daughter that the purpose of the trip is a vacation rather than work, George and Alex fly into town, where they're immediately met by a collection of loving generous but somewhat eccentric group of characters whose main eccentricity is that they all believe in Santa Claus. Georgetown is a picture book community we'd all love to live in and we'd love the people for neighbors. George soon meets a love interest in Susan (Jane Kazmarek.) Were it not for the grinch (Renfield) it would be an ideal time. But the fact is, he is in town to find property for Renfield to develop, and there is a nice ranch near town about to be foreclosed, and the dark edges of the movie revolve around the impending foreclosure and the reactions of the townies, the rancher, and the outsiders. I won't spoil the ending for those who've never seen the movie. It's a typical happy Christmas ending, but it's handled in a fairly subtle and believable way that shows the best in the human spirit without being too syrupy. All in all, this is a most pleasant way to spend a couple of your Christmas TV hours. John Denver and Jane Kazmarek have nice chemistry and Gennie James as Alex does a real nice job. I've always loved the work of Mary Wickes, a recognizable character actress, and all of the other cast members do a nice job with less meaty parts. This is a regular Christmas fare for my family

IN the movie....this is the town square where they hold the "CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING"
This is the POST OFFICE, where they had the "LETTER WRITING TO SANTA SCENE" It's the best preserved building in town.

Re: Queeny's Summer Trip 2008
WARNING........MAY TAKE A LONG TIME TO LOAD........MANY PICTURES INCLUDED HERE....
There are hundreds of little small mining towns, just barely surviving. But that "Pioneer" spirit is not one to turn toes up and leave.
So........we got to ESTES PARK, COLORADO on Saturday about lunch time. Set up our RV and promptly took off to explore the Rocky Mountain National park. We could not take the whole loop road, as the top half was still buried in snow.....but we did make it up the TRAIL RIDGE ROAD, almost to the 11,000 foot top......most of the high, snow covered mountains you see in the pictures are from this drive......at the top we got out and hiked to SPRAGUE LAKE....
Then Sunday, Chris took a two hour horse ride up into the Rocky Mountain National park and Hubby and I went into the historic ESTES PARK Town.......definitely a "tourist" mecca, but cool none-the-less. The interesting part of town was the "back alley" area. They embraced a river that runs through there, and all the shops open onto this walkway, pathway, picnic areas..........full of wooden cross over bridges, fountains, waterfalls, bronze statues....it's really amazing!
BTW......some of the elk you see in the pictures below are actually wandering around town! No fear of humans what-so-ever...
So without further ado........here are the pictures I took...
Driving up to Rocky Mountain National park (RMTP)
At the top...
Chris and his typical, "can't see my eyes" shot...
Chris and Dad......
Chris taken at Sprague Lake, with LONGS PEAK (in the middle of the Continental divide behind him)
More of Sprague Lake....we hiked all around this lake....(this is where my back took a hit....hiking over uneven terrain)
Queeny and Son, Chris at Sprague Lake.
This is Moraine Park....the Elk love it here.....and there is a large herd, they are collared to track them...
This is the Big Thompson river, it runs though out Estes Park, Colorado...this is the bridge going to the horse Stables where son rode.
Chris riding his rental horse named DUNDEE.
Just off to the right of the picture above with Chris riding DUNDEE coming down the trail, were these ELK, just calmly watching him.
This is our campground
Hubby and Chris getting the RV set up....check out the view over they shoulders.....this is what I see as I glance up from my computer, out the front window...
Now this is the town of ESTES PARK, COLORADO......nestled in a small valley......surrounded by peaks that reach up to 14,000 feet.....it's definitely a tourist town, but it has a very neat charm to it, as they embraced all nature and incorporated it in all parts of the town...
Coming into town is ESTES LAKE on both sides of the road.
Now that "backside"....and the parklike setting they have made along the river...some buildings in town actually straddle this river.
Some of the bronze animal statues along this parkway walk.
Beaver family
EAGLE
COUGAR
These ELK were coming out of town, towards our campground......right across the street from the BBQ place we ate at.
And these ELK are a bit hard to see as this was before the sun came up this morning......they are about 6 RV spaces away from us, heading back to where they bed down for the day..
