Doctor Who: The Unearthly Child

Doctor Who
The Unearthly Girl

Earth: London, England
1997

Ms. Jessica Wright didn’t believe herself to be extraordinary; she was a simple history teacher as far as she was concerned. She had been called attractive by several men but never felt it, she always felt uneasy with how she looked. In her 28 years of life she had never done anything exciting, the closest she had come to excitement was going to a party that was busted by the cops, she had left just before the cops arrived to break it up. She went to school got her degree and then became a teacher and had been one for nearly 5 years, teaching at the same High School she had graduated from when she was younger. Some of the staff remained, she now taught with her favorite teacher Barbra Hill. Others had been replaced, one such teacher was a young man named Ian Chesterton. She didn’t know a lot a bout him; he had already been here when she was hired.

The day had started like any other, she woke up got ready and went to class which went by relatively quick, it was now the last hour of the day which was always a tad bit on the strange side. The whole class was full of bright students, but one girl no more then 15 years old seemed a bit odd to her. The way she presented herself seemed to be almost forced, as if she were copying what she was seeing on TV. On this day she had promised to loan a book on the French Revolution to her.

“I’ll be right back,” Jessica announced as she made her way to the door after most of the class had left. “I left that book in the teacher’s lounge.”

“Ok Ms. Wright,” The young girl’s gray eyes watched as she left the room while pulling out a small CD player.

Ian Chesterton wasn’t a tall man but he was an imposing figure, his fellow teachers often joked about how just a look from him would cause the most unruly student to sit down and be quiet. His light brown hair was often short and unkempt but he didn’t really care for looks as long as his students got an education. Many of his former students often named him as their favorite teacher after leaving. At the moment though school was all but over, not having a last period class Ian had taken care of all his work already and was now just relaxing in the teacher’s lounge. Standing at the window with a cup of coffee in his hand he reflected on his day but as he had for the last 6 months he found himself thinking back to the strange girl who was in his Astronomy class, she was way out of his league. She knew things about Astronomy he had never learned in High School. Often times he wondered if he should just turn the class over to her and let her teach the class because she didn’t need the instruction. In his 32 years on the planet he had never seen anyone who knew so much about space outside of the space program.

Looking up as the door opened he saw the slender Jessica Wright walk in, a smile forming as soon as she saw him. She may have played down her looks, but the truth was she was a very pretty young woman, the object of crushes all over the school among the boys and even some of the girls. She was dressed casual as most of the teachers were, most wore slacks or dresses with a blouse, Jessica had worn slacks with a blue blouse and her dark brown hair had been tied back into a pony tail. When she looked at him her brown eyes seemed to sparkle, a clear sign she was happy to see him.

“Good Evening Ms. Wright,” Ian smiled lightly “What are you up to?”

“I’m just in here to get a book for a student, I left it in here,” Jessica replied barely taking her eyes off of Ian as she walked over to the counter and grabbed the book.”

“Really,” Ian watched as she picked up the book and hugged it to her chest. “Which one?”

“Jenny Foreman,” Jessica’s smile turned into a half smirk.

“Of Course Ms. Foreman, I have her in my Astronomy class,” Ian nodded his head.

“Isn’t she the most extraordinary girl,” Jessica stepped closer to Ian.

“Yes she is,” Ian smiled. “There is something about her that seems off, she’s so smart in some areas but in others not so much.”

“Yeah, I asked her about joining an advance placement History class and she seemed to love the idea, but when I told her that I would be over to talk about it, she said that I couldn’t come over, her grandfather doesn’t allow people to visit.” Jessica shook her head. “I was a little confused so I went to the office to get her address so I could talk to her Grandfather.”

“Really what’s he like, I understand he’s some kind of Doctor,” Ian asked

“That’s the thing, I never saw him, the address led to a junk yard,” Jessica sounded confused as she spoke.

“Maybe you got it wrong,” Ian suggested.

“I thought that too,” Jessica revealed. “But it was the address she gave us.”

“Strange,” Ian scratched her head. “Maybe we should go to the address and see if she shows.”

“That’s a bit much isn’t it,” Jessica replied.

“Well it would answer some questions would it not,” Ian made sense as he spoke. “If she goes there then we know the address is right. If she is living there then maybe we could help.”

“That does sound like a good idea,” Jessica relented. “Ok, I’m going to go and give this book to her then we’ll head over.”

“I’ll walk with you,” Ian grabbed his coat and followed Jessica out of the lounge towards her classroom at the end of the hallway.

When the two of them entered the room, they saw Jenny Foreman standing near the front desk swaying slightly to music that was playing on the CD player in her right hand. Her blonde hair was cut short and she generally looked slightly older then most 15 year olds. Her movement was nearly fluid more so then the dancing they normally see from teenagers in school dances. As soon as she noticed them she stopped and pulled the earphones away from her ears.

“Hello Ms. Wright, Mr. Chesterton,” Jenny said in a crisp voice, almost sounding like royalty the accent didn’t sound at all like the other students who lived in the area, it sounded more northerly not quite a British accent but hard to pin down as well.

“Hello Jenny, here is the book,” Jessica stepped over and handed her the book.

“Thanks Ms. Wright,” Jenny flipped through the book thoughtfully. “I’ll have it back for you tomorrow.”

“You can keep it until you finish it,” Jessica smiled lightly.

“Oh I’ll be done with it,” Jenny grinned knowingly

“Jenny, I was going to give Ms Wright a ride,” Ian spoke up. “Would you like us to drop you off someplace?”

“No that’s ok,” Jenny replied picking her book bag off the floor setting it on the desk. “I like walking in the fog.”

“Well ok then,” Jessica backed away from Jenny as she was leaving the room. “We’ll see you tomorrow then?”

“I don’t see why not,” Jenny nodded as the two of them left the room. Opening the book for a quick glance, Jenny’s eye fell onto a description of some events. “No, that’s not right at all.”

By the time Ian and Jessica parked across the street from 76 Totter’s Lane, the address Jenny had given as her home. Ian was a little surprised to see that Jessica was right. It was a kind of Junk yard, the words ‘I.M. Foreman’ covered the doors that led into the yard. While they couldn’t see much of the yard in the fog they could make out a building just on the other side of the fence, the office most likely. Since it was still winter the sun was already setting when they arrived but they knew they had beaten her to the yard, if indeed she was coming here. As they sat Jessica felt a little silly spying on a student yeah she seemed to be a little strange and her homework hasn’t been as good as it was. That could just be explained away by any number of things. The truth was they were curious about her. The fact she got to spend some time with Ian also helped her decide to come on this trip. Ian was in the driver seat waiting quietly playing some kind of game on his new cell phone, leaving her to her thoughts as she listened to the radio. A few minutes passed before out of the evening fog Jenny Foreman approached the gates for the yard. She paused at the gates to take a quick look around to almost as if she were checking to see if anyone was around. Elbowing Ian quickly she pointed at the young girl as she walked into the yard.

“Maybe she’s just meeting a boyfriend,” Jessica expressed her second thoughts about everything. There must be a reasonable explanation for all that she was seeing. She was after all a 15 year old girl.

“That would almost be nice at this stage,” Ian sighed. “It would be something normal.”

“Yeah,” Jessica agreed. “That would be something refreshing.”

“Well we better go and see if she’s ok,” Ian got out of the car and walked around to the front of it where Jessica joined him. Together the two of them walked towards the doors and stepped inside.

Inside the Junk Yard they didn’t see Jenny anywhere, taking a look around they saw no trace of the girl. Splitting up Ian searched the piles of junk while Jessica walked around, looking for any signs of life. Suddenly she saw something in a corner of the yard, stepping closer she saw that it was an old fashioned police box. Maybe some 30 years old, looking around it she discovered that it was in great shape despite its age. Placing her hand on the doors she felt a strange vibration unlike anything she had ever felt before.

“Ian over here,” Jessica called out.

“Why it’s an old Police Box,” Ian replied. “What’s it doing here?”

“Ian feel it,” Jessica commented as she placed her hand on the door again.

“It’s vibrating,” Ian took his hand away and walked around the box looking for a power source. “Doesn’t look like it’s plugged into anything, that doesn’t make any sense.”

“I agree, nothing is making sense,” Jessica sighed. “I don’t see Jenny anywhere.”

“She couldn’t have gotten out,” Ian shook his head. Suddenly sounds of the doors opening drew his focus, looking towards the only way in or out he found an older man entering the yard. Not knowing what he was doing here Ian grabbed Jessica and led her towards a stack of tires. Just as they ducked down the old man went to the doors of the Police Box and placed what looked like a key into the lock. When the door opened they could swear they heard a voice that sounded like Jenny’s. Coming out of the shadows Ian approached the Police box. When the old man saw them he closed the doors quick before turning to face him.

“What are you doing here?” The Old man asked with a slight northern accent sounding close to Jenny’s.

“We were looking for a young girl, we saw her come in here,” Ian replied.

“We?” The old man asked.

“Yes,” Jessica came out of the shadows to join Ian. “We were across the street when we saw our Student come in here. We got worried and followed her in.”

“Saw her from across the street you say,” The old man stroked his chin. “In this fog? Are you saw what you thought you saw, because as you can see there is no girl in here.”

“Well she couldn’t have left with out us knowing,” Ian stated.

“Besides we could have sworn we heard her when you opened the police box,” Jessica stepped towards the box.

“Now why would a girl’s voice come from something like an old Police Box?” The old man seemed to have a way to make them feel almost stupid with his questions.

“Maybe you locked her in there?” Ian pointed out.

“I did no such thing, you said you saw her go in you didn’t see me when you came in and you would have said something had you saw me leave. So how would I have locked her in the police box then left the yard only to return through the front gates, the only way in I might add,” The Old Man defended himself. Both Ian and Jessica had to agree that he did have a point.

“Now why don’t you leave,” The old man stepped away from the Police box.

“Maybe we should just get the police,” Jessica looked around the lot again.

“Yes leave and get the police,” The old man snickered. “I want to see you explain yourselves to the cops.”

“Grandfather,” Jenny’s voice called out as the doors to the police box opened.

“Close the doors Jenny,” The old man called out.

“Go Jessica,” Ian called out as he grabbed the old man as he had tried to move toward the doors.

Making her way through the doors she was dumbfounded by what she discovered. A large room with what appeared to be a control panel in the center of the room. Across the room was another series of doors leading to other rooms no doubt. Feeling Ian push into her she stepped aside allowing Ian to look around the room his face was also reveled his disbelief. The Old man pushed through the two of them reaching the panel where he flipped a switch causing the doors to close behind them. Jenny no longer dressed in her school uniform was now wearing a black shirt along with black slacks and a silver vest over the shirt.

“Mr. Chesterton, Ms. Wright, what are you doing her?” Jenny asked as she came towards them.

“They are known to you then,” The Old man waved at the two of them.

“Yes they are teachers at the school,” Jenny explained. “Do you know what you two have done?”

“I don’t understand,” Jessica was still in shock as she looked at the room. “It’s bigger on the inside.”

“Yes it is,” The old man replied almost sounding proud.

“What is this?” Ian walked around the room not quite sure what he was seeing.

“It’s the TARDIS.” Jenny beamed it was clear she loved to talk about it. “It stands for Time and Relative Dimension in Space.”

“But it’s not possible,” Ian touched one of the walls. “I walked around in this can’t be. It’s not humanly possible.”

“And yet here we are in a room that is bigger then what you saw from the outside,” The Old man sounded more like a teacher explaining to a student why the earth is round.

“Who are you?” Jessica asked.

“I’m the Doctor,” The old man placed his hands on the lapels of his jacket. “Jenny and I come from the planet Gallifrey near the constellation of Kasterborous some 250 million light years from planet Earth.”

“But that’s impossible,” Ian was cofounded. “The space travel that would require doesn’t exist.”

“Boy, we were harnessing space and time travel when the people of this planet were just learning to make fire,” The Doctor again sounded like a superior talking down to children.

“Grandfather let them go, I know these Earth people they don’t believe what they don’t understand.” Jenny pleaded.

“I can’t child,” The Doctor placed his hands on Jenny’s shoulders. “They’ve seen inside the TARDIS, while they don’t believe it now in time they will grow to understand. Can you imagine what would have happened had the Romans found guns or if Napoleon had the Atom Bomb? The whole future of time is at stake, these two can alter the course of history just with what they have seen. If they tell anyone about us they would seek us out and look into how to travel through space and time themselves.”

“We won’t tell anyone,” Jessica pleaded with the Doctor. “We swear, don’t we Ian?”

“Of course,” Ian agreed. “Not a word.”

“No it’s to risky,” The Doctor stated as he approached the counsel. “We must go.”

“But I like it here,” Jenny stated.

“I know you do,” The Doctor stated. “But we have spent to much time here, it is time for us to leave.”

“Doctor no,” Ian jumped forward just as the doctor activated the TARDIS causing the center of the counsel to move up and down as a wheezing sound filled the room. The jolt of the TARDIS moving caused both Ian and Jessica to fall to the floor as they flew through space and time. The monitor showed a rainbow of colors flying by them as they traveled.

When the TARDIS stopped the monitor showed a forest of some kind, no major signs of life outside the creatures that would live in the forest. It appeared to be dark out, however The Doctor knew better then to assume it was night. Looking over the instruments The Doctor seemed confused; he has set the controls to take the TARDIS to land on Earth in 2200 AD. But something was off the readings were nothing like Earth.

“Oh dear me,” The Doctor scratched his head as he tried to recall what he did. He had gone to the controls and then Ian jumped at him. Ian must have moved something causing them to go somewhere else.

“What happened,” Ian shook his head as he helped Jessica up from the floor.

“We have traveled,” Jenny answered from the other side of the control panel.

“You expect me to believe that,” Ian still didn’t believe what the Doctor and Jenny had said.

“What if it’s true?” Jessica did suspect that they were telling the truth as she looked over at the monitor.

“Fine open the doors,” Ian challenged. “Prove to me that we are no longer in London.”

“It’s not that simple young man,” The Doctor was taking readings about the air outside. “We have to make sure its safe.”

 “Conditions are habitable,” Jessica replied

“Shall we see what’s out there then?” The Doctor beamed as he spoke to Jessica. She had been upset about leaving London 1997 but the excitement of opening the TARDIS doors after landing had erased the feelings.

“Of course Grandfather,” Jessica flipped the switch that unlocked the doors. The Doctor was the first one out to take a look followed by Ian the Jessica and Jenny was the last one out.

“I don’t believe it,” Ian was shocked the sky was no longer the Blue he had known all his life it was more of a purple hue. The Trees looked the same but there was something different about them. “Where are we?”

“That my dear boy I do not know,” The Doctor answered. “When you rushed me it caused the destination to be changed, I now have no idea where we are or even when we are.”

Ian looked over at the Doctor he was still overwhelmed with what he was seeing, however the thought that they could now be lost troubled him. Off in the distance a group of locals watched the group as they searched the location closest to the blue box they came out of.

Next Time on Doctor Who…

-Ian and Jessica have their first contact with alien life.
-Jenny is captured by a rebel tribe.
-The Doctor seeks to find out where they are.
-The Doctor, Ian and Jessica go to rescue Jenny and are surprised by what they find.
