Batman The Long Halloween: III Thanksgiving
Batman
The Long Halloween
Part 3
Thanksgiving
Based off the Comic Book miniseries The Long Halloween by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale
Gotham City
Batman had tracked all the clues to one Mickey Sullivan, better known as The Mink. Using the nails from the bomb that had gone off at the Dent’s home he found Sullivan only blocks from the hardware store where the nails had been bought from. On the computer in the Batmobile he had everything he needed to know about The Mink. A member of the Irish, a small group of former IRA members who had come to the US after the IRA disbanded searching a new life. The other members consisted of Mickey’s older brother Donny Boy Sullivan, Jimmy Slick, Dapper Kevin and Willie Two Times. Once he got Mickey he would capture the other members of the gang. Batman wasn’t stupid enough to believe that the gang had gone after Harvey Dent on their own; they were likely hired by the Roman. He would just have to find away to prove it. Entering the building he found Mickey alone, in his room poring himself a glass of some Irish whiskey. Discovering Batman in the room, Mickey jumped out the window and used the wiring on the Motel sign to slide to the ground below. Batman followed Mickey out the window and was hot on his tail as Mickey ran into an alley way, where Mickey turned and fired his revolver causing Batman to stop to avoid any lucky shots hitting home. Opening a manhole at the end of the alley Mickey ducked into the sewers to avoid Batman. Knowing where he was heading Batman followed Mickey into the opening.
“Solomon Grundy,” Batman heard a voice call out when he reached the bottom. “Born on a Monday.”
“I have no fight with you,” Batman turned to find a giant of a man pounding away on Mickey. “I only came for the man who disturbed your Privacy, That man right there.”
“Solomon Grundy, Born on a Monday,” the big man repeated as he let Mickey go and approached Batman, repeating the same rhyme as he came. Batman saw the blow coming and he was prepared but still it knocked him across the room into the wall away from Mickey. Batman followed the blow with a punch of his own connecting with the man’s face. The only sign that he even hurt him was the blood that came from his nose, and that only made him madder. Grabbing Batman in a bear hug, Batman could feel the breath being squeezed out of his lungs. Not wanting to hurt the man Batman had no choice but to go after the nose again causing him fall to the ground as the man dropped him and retreated into the tunnels. Picking up Mickey, he made his way back to the surface and brought him to Police Headquarters. By the end of the night all five members of the Irish were locked up in the cells in the basement of the building.

Re: Batman The Long Halloween: III Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving Day
Standing in the shadows of the small room, Batman watched as Jim Gordon interview Mickey “The Mink” Sullivan. A member of the Irish, a group of five former IRA members turned assassins for hire. They tended to use bombs to get their jobs done; it had taken nearly 4 weeks to get the evidence needed to even bring the group in for questioning. But now here they were on Thanksgiving night when most people would be at home relaxing after a big meal. Most people that is except for Jim Gordon, with Barbra at her Grandparents for the holiday he was alone. Harvey had asked him if he wanted to come over again for Thanksgiving as he had done the year before, but that went up in the air when The Irish blew his home sky high on Halloween night, nearly killing a group of kids who had just left the house moments earlier and causing damage to the houses next to theirs.
“Harvey Dent is dead,” Batman remained in the shadows, his presence making Mickey uneasy. “We know you did it, but we also know you are a little fish. The only thing little fish are good for are catching bigger fish Mickey.”
“We want to know who hired you Mickey,” Gordon leaned onto his desk. “If you help us, maybe we’ll help you.”
“I don’t know any Carmine Falcone, never heard of, what ya call him, The Roman,” Mickey said in a think Irish accent.
“You made the Bomb that blew up Harvey Dent’s Home,” Batman’s voice came out in a snarl as he showed Mickey a bag containing a nail. “This nail came from that bomb. Every nail has a serial number like a gun and we traced it to the company who made it, the hardware store that sold it, a store just two blocks from where you live. We have a receipt that proves you bought those nails.”
“Harvey Dent,” Mickey held his ground. “It’s not like he didn’t have it coming. If it weren’t me that did the deed there was a line around the block to do it anyway.”
“You bought those nails,” Batman leaned forward. “You knew I would find you, it was only a matter of time.”
“Like you said, you found me,” Mickey confessed. “I did it, is that what you want me to say, I’ll put it in writing Boyo. But make no mistake, we all know what Dent gone and done.”
“What are you saying Mickey,” Gordon leaned forward on his desk.
“Only that you got to be asking yourself,” Mickey smiled as if he had just swallowed a canary. “Who killed Johnny Viti?”
“We’re done with you, get out of here,” Gordon sighed as Mickey was escorted out of the room. “Do you think there is anything to that, this isn’t the first time I’ve heard it.”
“That Harvey Dent put to bullets into the Roman’s nephew’s skull,” Gordon couldn’t tell if Batman made any movements at all. “I can’t believe it; I won’t believe it and you shouldn’t either.”
Mickey was escorted from where he was questioned down into the basement, as the cop led him down the hallway where the cells were the lights went out leaving the hall in pitch blackness.
“Hey who turned out the lights?” Mickey exclaimed.
“Everything all right,” a smaller cop asked when the lights came back on.
“Sure, Boyo,” Mickey replied as the two of them continued to the cells.
Back in the office, both Gordon and Batman continued to discuss the case, trying to figure out why Mickey would confess so quickly.
“I don’t understand, why confess and not implicate the Roman, Mickey’s facing the gas chamber,” Gordon scratched his chin.
“He’s scared,” Batman replied darkly. “Not of you, not of me, but of some more powerful.

Re: Batman The Long Halloween: III Thanksgiving
The Roman’s penthouse was full of activity as Carmine Falcone worked on a hardy Italian dinner for Thanksgiving. Most families would sit down to turkey and stuffing and other Thanksgiving standards. But not Falcone and his family, it was everything an outsider would imagine for an Italian feast. Complete with appetizers, to start things off followed by the first course with pasta and soup; followed by the second course consisting of fish and beef accompanied by a side dish, either a garden or a Caesar salad. Served with the finest Italian caffe, mostly an espresso and liquors, wine made from Falcone lands in Sicily. The meal would be followed by the dolce, dessert, made up if ice cream, Rum Baba, Cannoli, and Torta caprese, a traditional Italian chocolate and almond pie. All prepared by Carmine and his cooks. Sitting at the counter as Carmine was preparing a plate of sausage Carmine’s son Alberto watched and listened as his father explained how to cook the dinner.
“You then add the sausages,” Carmine poured the plate into the pan filled with tomato sauce. “We’ve got a lot to be thankful for Alberto.”
“Like what,” Carla Viti stormed into the kitchen, ever since her son Johnny was murdered barely a month before on Halloween she had been seeking to avenge the death with little help from The Roman or his crew. “Johnny is in the ground, tell me what I have to be thankful for?”
“Carla, my dear sister,” Carmine turned to face Carla as she stood in the door way. “The matter is being handled.”
“What the D.A?” Carla placed his fists on her hips showing no fear towards her brother. “You really think this was all the work of Dent, do you?”
“I said the matter is being handled, Carla, and I don’t like repeating myself,” Carmine’s voice had grown tense. Alberto quickly wondered if Carmine could order the death of his own sister. “Now come on its Thanksgiving, No more business.”
“This wasn’t business, Carmine,” Carla stood her ground. “Johnny was my only son, my Baby.”

The holding cell that was big enough to hold twenty men only held the five members of the Irish. When Mickey was tossed back into the cell, his four cell mates all turned to look at him. All were suspicious that Mickey might have ratted out group by revealing what really happened. They weren’t dummies and knew full well even the slightest mess up and they were as good as dead.
“You lads know what to do?” Mickey stayed in the shadows of the cell as he spoke.
“We’ve been over it before, Mick,” Mickey’s older brother Donny Boy stood up and walked over towards Mickey. “It’s not like we have to go over it again.”
“We’ve never been this far down the mouth of the lion before,” Mickey didn’t move to watch his brother walk around him.
“Then we stick together like always,” Donny Boy grabbed his shoulders as everyone in the cell started laughing. “So we get caught in its damn throat.”
Each Member of the group was brought up one at a time an interviewed, each confessing to being part of the plot. Jimmy Slick drove the get away car, Dapper Kevin delivered the package to the house, Willie Two Times followed Dent to his house, and Donny Boy flipped the switch. Each man said they would put it in writing what they did. All were painfully rehearsed and clean no mention of the Roman at all. As far as Batman was concerned, the Roman was paying them his money’s worth. With the last man finished there was only one thing left to do.
“Bring Mickey back up,” Batman nodded towards Gordon as he ordered his men to carry out Batman’s wish. When Mickey was brought back into the room a few minutes later he was seated in a chair and his restraints were removed. “Anything?”
“Nada, Falcone’s name wasn’t even brought up,” Mickey’s voice had lost its Irish accent. “Only thing I learned was that I have the worst Irish Accent, you’d ever hear, Boyo.”
“Do you think they suspected,” Gordon placed his hands on his hips as Mickey started peeling at the disguise he was wearing.
“That we switched Mickey’s,” He shook his head. As he pulled the last of the mask off to reveal Harvey Dent. “You’re giving them way too much Credit. And I guess I’m not dead anymore. I don’t know how you do it Bats, being two people at once, assuming you are two people. So with out a murder charge to spook the Irish, I’m for letting them walk. We can put the word out on the street that they cut a deal, see how the Roman reacts.”
“We can still charge them,” Gordon slammed his hand on to his desk causing a loud bang. “They confessed to attempted Murder, they blew up your house and put Gilda in the Hospital for God’s sake.”
“They’ll make bail in an hour,” Dent stood up with his arms wide. “Bribe a Judge and we’ll still have nothing.”
“Charge them Harvey,” Gordon leaned forward. “Or I’ll find someone who will.”

Re: Batman The Long Halloween: III Thanksgiving
Harvey was wrong, The Irish didn’t make bail in an hour, it took them a half hour to make bail and head home as good as free men. Batman watched them head to the car that was waiting for them from atop Police Headquarters. Their plan to get Falcone had failed, just another failed plan in along line of plans they had thought up since Batman first arrived to Gotham City. Now the Irish were back on the street and The Roman was sitting in his penthouse laughing away enjoying his Thanksgiving. Harvey Dent went to the Hospital to be with his wife, she had caught the brunt of the explosion when the bomb went off. Harvey was lucky enough to see the inside of the package before the bomb went off giving him just enough time to duck down and warn Gilda. That split second had saved both their lives, but Gilda didn’t get away Scott free, she was in a coma, induced by the doctors to keep the injuries from getting worse. Harvey had been burned and was wounded by debris but had escaped with no major injuries. Now nearly a month later he sat at his wife’s side to spend Thanksgiving with her. James Gordon arrived to his empty house with a Thanksgiving dinner prepared by a restaurant who allowed him to take it home to eat as he watched the last NFL football game of the day on the TV. Batman dropped off his own thanksgiving meal at the sewer tunnel and left, he never saw Solomon Grundy take the plate of food back down the tunnel towards his hidden home.
At the Astoria Towers Hotel, the Irish were joking and eating a Thanksgiving ordered by the Roman himself for them to enjoy when they got back to the Hotel. Mickey was seated at the head of the table with his big brother on his right and rest of the gang seated along the rest of the table. They had a lot to be thankful for, they had made a good deal of money from The Roman for taking out Dent. While he may no longer be dead, they still put him out of the picture for a while. Business was going good for the whole family.
“To the Roman,” Mickey lifted his glass to toast their benefactor. “The founder of the feast.”
“To the Roman!” the others joined in the toast.
As they started to eat, a lone figure walked down the hall way to the dinning room. A single do not disturb sign hung from the door handle as a gloved hand reached out to open the door. The five men turned to the door to notice the gleam of a handgun as it came through the door way first. Before the men could respond the gun fired five shots, one for each member of the Irish. The figure walked slowly to the table to fire one more round into each of the assassin’s heads. Leaving the gun, ten shell casings, a shot out rubber baby bottle nipple and a Thanksgiving Cornucopia in the center of the table, once everything was set up the figure shut out the lights and left the room and disappeared into the night’s blackness.
Coming Next Time:
-The Joker Escapes
-Batman and Gordon seek info about Holiday
-The Dent’s return home to find an unwelcome guest
-Holiday strikes again

Re: Batman The Long Halloween: III Thanksgiving
I might be doing things differently though, in the Comic we have no really straight answer as to the Holiday thing. We have a person who confessed and two others who might have had a hand in it
