Why do you play the clarinet?

Believe it or not, the reason I started is because I wanted to play an instrument, and the clarinet was the only one that the school didn't have away for repairs.
I play it now because I love its sound, expressiveness and wonderful technical facility.

Re: Why do you play the clarinet?

I started on sax, and mastered the basics of five flavors fairly quickly. (Tone, technical tricks like smear and growl and double toung, decent sightreading, masterd entire range except overtones)

My brother is teaching me some jazz theory now, but I really need a sax teacher and a minor/melodic ect teacher. So.. while I'm waiting, I get better at sax, and decided, why not, i'll just grab a clarinet and teach myself... and I did. (same with brass and flute)

I played clarinet last year, and since my dad bought a $1000 plastic clarinet for our family to do elementary band, I had to do clarinet. I sometimes still practice clarinet, and I loved it last year and am able to play good, but I did clarinet in gr.6 and I'm in gr. 7 now and we have to change instruments so now I do flute and piccolo.

It's Gr. 6 + 7 band, and it's high school preperation band, so we do a instrument in Gr. 6 if you join band, and work on essential elements 2000, which is a beginner lesson book, and do some sheet music and go on a band trip and that's it for one year, and in Gr. 7, since it's a 6+7 band, both grades have to do the same things so we have to do another instrument and start from 0.

Did I confuse you all? Or shall I say confuzzle?

Re: Why do you play the clarinet?

I missed my flute audition in year 8 and was watching a BBC Prom when my Mum said I should go fo clarinet. To cut a long story shot I auditioned and was accepted, which was 4 years ago. I got to Gr V standard when I had to decide if I was going to concentrate on clarinet or violin, so I chose violin because viola goes hand-in-hand with it. Plus I'm not allergic to the violin at all ... !

To see if I was suitable. I suppose to see if we could handle the embouchure, had long enough fingers etc. Oh well, whatever it was I passed emoticon

Suppose it also depends how many teachers there are to go round - there were more people at school wanting to play clarinet than there was time for.
