Re: Why do you play the trombone? Do you know, I can never remember the ranges of the different types of trombones? Every time I write for them, I have to look it up in the Adler orchestration text.

Re: Why do you play the trombone? Ah right. well the dark red notes are difficult and the bright red are unplayable. all the black ones are in the range of a good amateur; the dark red (difficult) ones are usually reserved for professionals It got the violin and viola ranges right, and actually on mine it got the clarinet right ...

Re: Why do you play the trombone? I'm a bit behind on my orchestration: the only books I've studied are Forsyth, Piston and Burton. However, from reading a lot about trombones on various sites, here is a general idea of range:
Soprano trombone in Bb: e-bb''
Alto trombone in Eb: A-eb''(I'm unsure of pedal range)
Tenor trombone in Bb: E-c''pedal range: E'-Bb'
Tenor trombone with F valve: a fourth lower ( unsure about the low pedal tones however )
Bass trombone in Bb-F: B'-a'pedal range: C'-Bb
Contrabass trombone in F-Bb: E'- f' pedal range: Ab'' or Bb''- F'
Remember the contra needs a lot of air for those low tones.
I guess I am lucky because I play trombone and when I write a trombone part I already know its ranges and technical abilities etc.
Regarding sibelius ranging - has it gotten better in the newer versions, I mean I only have 2 I trust you all have like 3 or 4 and by the time I get version 4, version 10 would most likely be released.
Re: Why do you play the trombone? Yeah, I've got Sibelius 4... but I already told you that. It's great- it does stuff like automatically extracting parts for you and updating them as the score is updated.
