My lack of social skills.

I am not the easiest person in the world to be friends with. The people who are friends with me have learned to accept a few simple facts.
1. I am not very good in social situations, and I find them to be, for the most part, a waste of time.
2. If I am not talking to you, it means I do not have anything to say. It does not mean that I dislike you.
3. Yes, I do find the idea of going to the library more appealing than yet another drunken party.
4. Occasionally I will find the train timetable more interesting than you.
5. I will be obsessive about music, psychology, anything to do with the human brain, the train timetables and routes, chaos theory, and whatever else catches my interest. This will mean that I seemingly ignore you for weeks at a time. It's not personal, and I still like you.
6. As shocking as it may seem to your average social human, I actually prefer my own company.
7. In crowds, my senses become overloaded with noise and movement. I do not have any mental resources left to talk to you.
The small handful of people who have ever managed to achieve some degree of closeness to me are those who realise how much effort I have to put into the simplest of interactions. It took me years to remember such simple social algorithms as
See friend
Greet friend.
Ask how friend is.
Ask how friend has been, remembering to make reference to their life and interests.

and
When a friend is at our house, we should remember to offer them a drink. We should also remember to stay and talk to them and not disappear to our bedroom with a book, even if that is what we feel like doing.
To this day, I have to remind myself to do things like that, things that are reflexive for most people.
In friendships, there should be mutual tolerance. I tolerate the fact that most people think very slowly, process information very slowly, and have poor memories. In return, my friends appreciate that social skills do not come easily to me.

Oh, thank you. I am proud to have met you, too.
You remind me of a less troubled version of me...
