I am a composer, studying at the QLD Conservatorium of Music.
Are any of my members composers?

hey rachel, i saw the thread 8notes about this. i can't really say i'm a composer, but i have written a few songs for my friend (she wrote lyrics, i wrote music). when i write a few more, i'll try to post them, or send a recording or something.

yay! first reply! emoticon anyway, i was wondering how everyone else writes songs
- is there a formula you use for form, etc.
- what inspires you to write?

posticon Re: To start this forum off

I'm studying compostion ( well, theory at the moment ) at the Victoria conservatory of music. Thats Victoria Canada not Australia emoticon .
I haven't written much as I'm only in grade four theory ( however, I've gleaned what I can from looking at scores and figuring things out by myself ).
 So far:

A few simple harpsichord works.
A string sextet.
A trio for two violas and bassoon.

I'm currently writing:

A scherzo for organ in one movement. This has been great fun to write, it's written using following scale:

C-D-Eb-Fb-G-Ab-Bbb-C ( the small b's are flats )

I'd like to write or will be trying to write:

My first attempts at a song ( setting a poem by Akhmatova or one by Baudelaire, haven't decided which ).

However, I'm really working hard on theory and viola, so probably not much composition till this summer.
But one can always daydream!

You know Joel (and Rachel), I really don't think that Finale Notepad 2005 does those things.
I have that program, 2003 notepad, and Finale 2003.
I know that you can do time changes, key changes and all that cool stuff with Finale 2003, but I'm almost certain that you can't with 2005 notepad.
Then again, with Finale Notepad 2005 I know that you can actually type the music you are writing with your keyboard instead of going through all the trouble of mouse-clicks and accidentally hitting a wrong note.
At any rate though, if you really want to compose something and have more than just hundreds of accidentals and the exact same tempo through the whole thing, an actual finale program would be your best bet. I got mine from a friend so I actually didn't have to pay for it (hehe).
Sorry, I couldn't help more...

Um, I found that Sibelius software makes that kind of thing stupidly easy. Although um, mine wasn't actually an entirely legal copy ... emoticon But yeah, if you can get hold of it somehow (it's really expensive to buy!) it's well worth it. I'm using Sibelius 2 which is so much better than Sib 1, but I prefer it to Sib 3 too, because Sib 3 is just complicated to work! I've heard they've brought out Sib 4 now though ... emoticon
