Mine is the clarinet, followed closely by the violin, viola and cello.

A more precise order of my liking is this:

viola/bassoon ( a tie! )
cor anglais
heckelphone/oboe ( another )
violoncello
horn/oboe d'amore ( tie again )
trumpet
basset horn
violin
taragoto
alto saxophone
bass clarinet
alto trombone
Eb clarinet
tenor trombone
Bb and A clarinets ( can you tell the difference? )
double bass
alto flute
euphonium
side drums

past that I like instruments, but not in any particular order...
Instruments I hate:

Any saxophone played badly
Triangle
Glockenspiel ( the celesta is nice; the glockenspiel is twee )
Piccolo ( it Really hurts my ears )

What is a taragato? I'm sure I've heard of it but I can't remember what it is.
I can usually tell the difference between the A and Bb clarinets. The A is darker and more "floating", to my ear.

I've never been close enough to really compare the two ( i.e. I haven't heard one after another so I can't really compare ).

A taragoto is kind of like a narow-bore wooden soprano saxophone ( it uses a single reed ). Also the mouthpeice is different, but I'm not a clarinetist so I can't say exactly how.
The end result is that it has a very dark sound, kind of like a bassoon and clarinet mixed in together.

I'll dig up a sound sample in a moment.

Here you go, three different samples of taragoto music:

Also ( in very questionable taste ) chicken run on basset clarinet!

I had to go for viola - so esonant and vesatile. But I love oboes (especially the lowe ones. Oboe d'amore's good too) and low harmony clarinets, and the big flutes, and euph, and cello, and violin. Sax can sound lovely when played well, and I'm quite into timpani at the moment. Just to clarify - the above instuments were in no particular orde, and I should have included bassoons there. Although harmony instuments tend to come above their egular counterparts, I must say.

Eek 2.30 am! emoticon must go!

I want to get my mitts on a basset horn!!! emoticon

I think we call it a horn and not a clarinet because it doesn't fit in with the whole Bb / Eb series of things. Neither does the A clarinet but that's so close to Bb it would be a crime not to call it a clarinet! Yeah, just a little useless aside there! emoticon

I'd quite like to hea an ophecleide actually. I know I have a Mendelssohn overture in which it plays but 1) I can't find the CD and b) I doubt I'd be able to hear when it plays (especially with not knowing what it sounds like in the first place.)
