hello,
Started out playing viola because I liked the sound- and because I thought I might have a better chance career wise if I played an unpopular instrument. I really like playing it now, especially since I put new strings on so it sounds 100% better than when I first got.

Yes, new strings make a huge difference. How long have you played for?

I would have to vote "other" on your poll, because I started out on violin, the instrument that enthralled me as a child. I played viola a couple of isolated times, but didn't switch to it until after experiencing several orchestral jobs as a violinist. Actually, I was trying to audition for another job, and became convinced that I'd have better chances going in as a violist, the need being greater there. I got the job, subsequently left it, but have never left the viola or even thought about it, lo these many years!

I suppose "I was matched up with it" is true, in a certain sense, if not the generally understood one. emoticon

That's why I started the viola! But I didn't give up the violin once I started viola, though.

I didn't give it up entirely, either. I still keep a small fiddle around for the occasional gig, but I never practice until the day before, just to re-acclimatize myself.

I play some other instruments too for fun, but they're all strings (mandolin family).

So you are primarily a clarinetist, but also play violin and viola? That's interesting. Must have been quite a switch!

I'm sure you've noticed from my sig that I have a viola gear shop. What do you think of
this particular design? I made it as a special request, but just put it up for, umm, "public consumption".

Because it's bigger, has a beautiful, dark sound, has a c string, and plus ..... violin is WAY overrated emoticon

It won't let me vote...

I started playing the viola at music camp (hahah American Pie!)...seriously, one of the ensemble leaders was looking for another violist for the Medellsohn Octet and taught me the 3rd position cheat so I could join the group.

Now, 28 years later, I still play it. I actually play a lot of 5 String lately, on a violin and a viola (the low string is the C).

Re: Why do you play the viola?

I started on violin then found a viola at school. I have weird hearing and was finding that the high notes on violin were hurting my ears (odd harmonics, hard to explain) so decided I liked viola better. Plus I was feeling squished on violin and liked the size of the viola, so I asked if I'd be able to learn, and it went from there emoticon I do violin exams though because a) violin pieces are published in one book whereas viola pieces are all separate, b) the violin pieces are better anyway, and c) because my finges aren't quite long enough really for some of the scales on viola. My arm's long enough for a 16" but not my fingers!

Which scales do you have trouble with? First- and half-position scales need the widest spacing, but as you get higher the distances get smaller. I tend to have more problems on that end, but most viola peices shy away from the extreme high range. It must be a bummer having trouble in the range that the viola plays in most emoticon .
