Bad repertoire?

Just a question for the violists here; has bad repertoire ever discouraged you?

Re: Bad repertoire?

I do violin exams instead of viola because the violin pieces are better ...

Godzilla, maybe we need to start writing good repertoire for the viola. emoticon

One of my ambitions is to write a viola concerto! Though that'll have to wait several years ...

Re: Bad repertoire?

I think the main flaw in the repertoire is anti-modernist reactionaries that seem to govern music pedagogy at the moment. The viola doesn't have vast amounts of music from the 18th and 19th centuries, so it's best repertoire is out of the "common practice period".

PS: Weirdly, I have no memory of starting this thread. emoticon

Although Marchenbilder is quite a good set of pieces ... even though there are only 4 ...
