What happened to this hub?

I was invited to join the Echoes hub by Marooned in January 2006.

I accepted the invitation and received the following reply, including a list of rules:

    Your account has been activated.

Congratulations, you are now an official member of the International Echoes Hub! Soon, you will be on your way to meeting others who are into collecting and trading music online just like you.

You have been granted access to download and share thousands of unofficial live concert recordings of many bands, including over 800 Pink Floyd concerts.

    1. Important hints you need to know...

        * No sharing MP3 or any other lossy audio.

        * No sharing official material of any kind.

        * Watch the tabs along the bottom of the software. These are your tabs that you will switch back and forth for main chat, private messages and file lists.

        * Please ask how you can switch the software to active mode, this is important.

        * Echoes Hub Moderators are those with keys next to their name.

        * Please don't shut off the software if you can help it, this will disconnect you from the hub. The hub relies on traders being active and present. Why not download shows when you sleep? It's always fun to wake up or come home from work and see which shows have finished downloading!

Note the statement that talks about sharing "unofficial live concert recordings of many bands, including Pink Floyd." It does not say the hub is exclusively Pink Floyd or that you must be a Pink Floyd fan to join. It also does not say that you must share Pink Floyd recordings.

Without getting into a flame war, suffice it to say that I am not a Pink Floyd fan. I believe Marooned invited me because I had an eclectic mixture of files that would be of interest to people. I joined because I believed fans of "unofficial live recordings of many bands, including Pink Floyd" might have some stuff I might like. But before last week, I did not have any Pink Floyd in my possession.

Nothing against you or Pink Floyd or Marooned or this hub. I fully believe that if you like Pink Floyd, want to share Pink Floyd, that is great. The more music people are exposed to, the better. I think it is great that Pink Floyd fans can gather at this hub. But I won't force my stuff on you, and please don't force your stuff on me.

Last week the ops on the hub kicked me repeatedly for two transgressions - incomplete shares (no problem - quickly resolved), AND A FAILURE TO SHARE MORE THAN 1 GB OF PINK FLOYD.

I had been visiting the hub for 5 months and this was the first I had heard that I had to share something specific to participate.

You can run your hub however you want to. But why force someone to share something they don't want to share?

I have an 80 GB hard drive and had at certain times been sharing over 50 GB. I need every MB I can muster. But, to placate the ops who kept kicking me, I downloaded and shared (and cleared off several files from my machine, at great inconvenience) to placate the newly voiced requirements of the ops.

I put the phrase "SHARING BECAUSE THE OPS MADE ME" at the beginning of my newly acquired Pink Floyd shares. Yesterday I was kicked by Cygnals for the following reason:

"Private message from Cygnals: <Cygnals> You are being kicked because: For acting like a child...if you do not want to share Pink Floyd it is real simple...just do not log into a Pink Floyd hub!"

I again say the fact that you like Pink Floyd is great, and you can run your hub however you want. But I resent the hard line taken on forcing me to share stuff that others are already sharing, especially after participating for 5 months without these rules. The initial invitation and rules which did not say that Pink Floyd was the be-all and end-all of this hub.

I feel very unwelcome. Further, the irony of laying down and enforcing a strict set of rules in an unofficial recording hub is laughable.

Thank you for the initial invitation, Marooned. You had a great hub. But at this point I have little desire to share things where I feel so unwelcome.
