Why cant they play nice?
I went to Live 8, I saw them get it back together for one night. I saw Rog truly touched by the event. Yet after such a reunion they continue to snipe at each other and I just dont get it. Both Gilmour and Waters say they've let go the bone, but they wont quit.
In an article in the Dutch mag Hugo, Roger continues to crap on Dave and claim that most of Floyd's music was his solo work. He goes so far as to express remorse for giving Mason credit on Careful with that Axe....
Dave on the other hand when recently interviewed regarding his contributions to Kate Bush's new work was asked if Bush reminded him of Roger. I think his comment was that she was prettier and much much nicer.
Looks to me like neither of these dudes will let go the bone. I feel like the press is to blame in that they continue to goad each of them into pot-shotting the other. Regardless of whose to blame...its disheartening that after a nice little 4 song reunion gig that they cant at least sit back and enjoy what they've accomplished. Let it go guys.

Re: Why cant they play nice?
Hi rfj3
It can be frustrating to the Pink Floyd fans who long for nothing more than for the four of them to continue to create musical masterpieces as a foursome - however David and Roger, and they alone, know the reasons and motivations behind their estranged relationship.
I agree with you that the media probably plays a large role in the continuation of the hard feelings by chronically reopening a wound that ought to have healed decades ago.
IMHO, these guys have "let it go" and demonstrate that by putting out awesome music respectively and contributing to noble causes. It appears to be more the expectation of the fans wanting to see them exuding lavish praise on one another and working on projects together that makes it seem that their are harboring endless grudges.
They both are elite musical geniuses as well as perfectionist and both expect to run the ship - this is the best way for both of them to continue to contribute artistically without letting the egotistic side of their psyches get in the way and mar what music is in the developmental stages.
They are both masters at their craft who choose to agree to disagree. I feel they both sit back, relax and truly enjoy their success and enjoy it even more so by their work with younger artists and in other genres (i.e. orchestral, operatic) and infusing them with their magic. Thus a guarantee that their influnce will spread universally and continue through the ages.

Well...all I can say is that if I had the kind of money either of them have, bickering and quibbling over things that happened nearly 30 years ago would be the last thing on my mind. I know they say money can't buy you happiness but it sure can buy you time to sit around and think about all the reasons why you should be happy.

I agree with you Random Precision... again it would seem that the media as well as some of the fans have more direct impact in the maintenance of such quibblings.
Nary a public situation can occur without either of them being questioned on something regarding the past... and the past is just that... past.

Re: Why cant they play nice?
Thanks for the responses,
Frankly I never really expected to see them arm in arm hugging and wishing they had not wasted the past 20 some odd years bickering with each other. Been following Floyd too long to expect that.
But there was a moment...I was at the show and I think that everyone there felt it. That moment when they were all up there together playing again...not posturing or fighting or off in Spain at the beach. That solitary moment when they launched into Breathe and the pig was flying across the screen. The moment when they were the band again. I think they all recognized it. And I think all of them save for Rog guarded themselves against it.
I just hope now that the moment is past that they can still appreciate how they felt up there. I hope they can see their way clear to stop the jabs and enjoy their success, like we enjoy their music. Let PF rest in peace.

Re: Why cant they play nice?
The whole thing can be summed up allegorically: Dave and Roger were 'married' for years, ticking along, until DSOTM became the huge success any band would kill for. After that, why carry on? Luckily for us they produced some more brilliant work till arguments grew too much and they divorced. There were bitter arguments over who should have the house, and Dave seemed to have won with Roger getting a small stipend(Roger wanted the house knocked down - but that's taking the metaphor too far!).
The cause behind Live-8 struck Roger as being important enough to swallow his bitterness and kiss his ex-wife in front of the cameras for the sake of the kids. We don't want them growing up scarred and scared.
(Come on, you know we're the kids, right?)
But Roger still thinks his Ex is throwing wild parties in the old house with his lasers and his invisible wall. And Dave thinks - why shouldn't we be able to what we want?
I blame marriage for 99% of all divorces.

Onion3000...
You put to words my thoughts almost to a tee. That's precisely how I have always viewed their dynamics... and I get increasingly frustrated at the incessant questioning at any and every opportunity to inquire about reunions etc.. It's not a question you ask divorced couples over and over again... and yes, the fans/children allegory.. so true!!
