Re: Here I am
Welcome to the new board guys, and thanks for showing your support. (^_^)
quote: so whats going on, why the board wars?
The Planet Sabretron board was first established in 1999 - as Axaday would remember, when I left the BWTF boards in disgust due to the unmoderated behaviour of certain members there. I also wanted to establish a place for Australian Transfans to gather without being overwhelmed by overseas fans. While overseas fans like Axaday are most welcome here, we've always maintained a heavily Australian focus on the board.
As for why I have decided to revamp the Sabretron board and why I have left the OzFormers board - it is due to similar reasons for why I left the BWTF boards six years ago - a lack of satisfactory policing, which makes the board unpleasant to continue visiting and posting on.
I won't drop any names, but a dispute arose between myself and another moderator on that board. But rather than settling the dispute in a civil manner, the other moderator became extremely immature, irrational and angry and basically tried to start a flame war - which was quickly neutralised by myself and another moderator. Any attempt by myself and other moderators to reason with this person has failed - the person has continued to act irrationally and immaturely - and has even made threatening remarks against me (which have been recorded should they be required to be reproduced in a court of law). The administrator of the Ozformers board sat back and did nothing to settle this dispute, and it was only after a neutral moderator brought this issue to the administrator's attention, did he finally take action.
The administrator has removed moderator status from both the offending moderator and myself - since we were both involved in the dispute. I see this as a completely half-arsed and unsatisfactory solution, because he has equally penalised both of us, despite the fact that throughout this entire debacle, I have ever remained rational and emotionally dettached - responding to the other party with rational rebuttals (as you do in a debate), whereas the other party has been irrational and immature, responding with abusive flames, deleting any rebuttals and going for shameless point-scoring - in effect, shamelessly abusing his moderator powers, and this behaviour simply exacerbated when another moderator told him to behave himself and reign himself in - he effectively told that moderator where to stick it and boasted that he would continue his rampage. Which he did.
As much as I value Griffin as a good friend and fellow Transfan, I simply find that he is an ineffectual moderator, because he's simply too nice. And when you're policing people - which is what your job is when you moderate a board, you cannot be nice to people all the time, especially when you're in a position to reprimand them. Griffin insists on being utterly neutral, which is again a poor attitude to have if you intend on maintaining civil peace. A moderator should be objective, but not neutral. Griffin would prefer not to hurt anyone's feelings (at least in the short term), but as the saying goes, if you want to bake a cake, you're going to have to break an egg. It's nothing personal against Griff - like I said, I still value him as a friend and Transfan, but I feel that he simply can no longer be relied upon to be an effectual board leader, as he lacks the tenacity to take action against recalcitrant users - and when he does, he will take a broad general action to avoid looking like he's committing "favouritism," but in the long run he is ruining the integrity of the board by not taking appropriate and fair action.
People do not mind being penalised so long as it is seen as being fair.
What Sabretron will offer is a fairer and more civilised place to post. If users have a dispute with each other - or even with me, I will listen to the arguments and make a decision. If users disagree with my judgements, they may make an appeal.
But what is just as important as what you are saying is how you say it. If a user tries to make an appeal with anger and is irrational, then forget it - I'm not going to help you. Which was the problem with the dispute in the first place - the other moderator disagreed with an action I'd taken, but rather than discussing his grievance with me or another moderator, he became enraged and threw a continuing online temper tantrum/sook.
Look at recent news for example - Nationals Transport Minister Andrew Fraser is now facing suspension from State Parliament because he manhandled Joe Tripoli during a session of Parliament! Nobody is disagreeing with the point that Minister Fraser was trying to raise, or the fact that he vehemently disagreed with Minister Tripoli - but the fact that he physically attacked another Minister is utterly unacceptable, hence why he was ejected from Parliament and is now facing a suspension.
Had Griffin been in charge of this decision, some time next week both ministers would be ejected and suspended from Parliament. Because that's the sort of decision he made on OzFormers, which I'm sure you can see is just not fair. Yes, the other moderator had just cause to disagree with me and be disgruntled at me, but he did not have a right to start a flame war and abuse his moderator powers against me.
