Learning Shodan Kata
Hi, I'm an experienced MA guy. My primary arts are kali and silat though I practice other things too, off and on.
I'm interested in some of the Shotokan self-defense katas and bunkai. They look good to me and they look fairly easy to pick up.
I'm going to start with Tekki Shodan, learn that, and work up from there. I shouldn't have much problem with the movements involved.
Do you have any suggestions on how to break this kata up into bunkai? What are interpretations of the kata and how can I benefit most from it?
The reason I'm doing this is because classes aren't an option for me right now and I need to pick up my solo training regimen.
Thanks!

Re: Learning Shodan Kata
Hi Golok,
Welcome to the forum. Great to hear you find Shotokan katas interesting. Since you are trying solo training, I suggest you at least try to learn the moves from an experience Karateka first (maybe a friend) and at least be familiar with few bunkai (applications) of the kata. Failing which, you can try learning it through a video. My website have video clips of most Shotokan katas.
Kata is meant to help you train solo when partners are not available. I think it's important to learn the bunkai alongside the moves in the kata, otherwise learning the kata would just be like learning a choreographed dance set, no real use. Tekki/Naihanchi Shodan is a great start. In the old days, they teach this kata to beginners.
All the best!

Re: Learning Shodan Kata
Like I said, I do silat, and in that, the forms are extremely cryptic but have numerous applications. So I'm pretty good at seeing joint destructions, bone breaks, sweeps, leg traps, spine wrenches, et cetera.
