Share your stories or real life experience
Please tell us your stories of using your Karate skills to defend yourself in real life.
Let's share with one another what works and what doesn't.
Let me start the ball rolling...
I've never gotten in a real dangerous encounter before but I once successfully parried away a hard slap from a "friend" who have lost her cool using mawashi-uke, or circular parry.
Next please...

Re: Share your stories or real life experience
It all works. just depends on the ability of the opponent as to how well it works.
My first use of martial arts was at school when a year ten bully was picking on some year 7 students. I wooped him using the tactics I had been shown in Kempo Kwan by Harold Falge. It was very exciting as I was only 12. My latest fight was a pub brawl in April, where about 100 people started fighting, over what I still don't know, I was working as a crowd controller/supervisor, I ended up with eight guys beating me, ouch. I used my martial arts to cover up and keep my balance, thus sustaining only bruising, swelling etc, to my arms, head, body, and a nostril ripped off. When Chris another crowd controller saw my plight and came to assist we overcame the assailants and took them to the ground, using strikes, arm locks, and upper body vascular neck restraints, commonly refered to as a sleeper holds. It was a very painful experience. I didn't find it exciting as I am now 41 and have been doing this job to long. The martial art I studied the most is Ryukyu Kempo. I am glad I studied it, as it is very realistic training.

Re: Share your stories or real life experience
Hi Rob,
Wow. It must be scary to be jumped on by 8 guys. You must be really good to have survived this encounter with relatively minor injuries. May I know how were you assaulted, was it just wild haymakers and football kicks? Did anyone restrain you (bear hug, full nelson etc) while his mates beat you? Glad Chris came to your aid. How were able to apply sleeper hold on a person while his mates were still around to assault you?
Two against 8 and you guys came out alright, must be heckuva fight!
Stay safe,
Charles.

Re: Share your stories or real life experience
Hey charles,
when doing security in clubs and pubs it is not unusual to have to fight that many people, you have to remember most of them are not good fighters. In an all in brawl situation, groups of friends seem to have their fun and move on to the next victim. If they actually come up against any real resistance they tend to try and get away as they were not expecting to get hurt themselves, mob mentality. Chris (who is about 5'7") jumped up on the back of the largest guy (over 6')and pulled him towards a wall whilst applying a neck restraint using him as a barrier against the ones that went to help their mate. I fought off a couple then found an opportunity to restrain the main offender, once I had him the rest seemed to lose their confidence and back off, thankfully, as I said it was a painful experience. I have now finished working in pubs and clubs, as I feel that younger bouncers can have that sort of fun.
