Kata for self defense
I believe that kata contains all the self defense techniques that are not directly applicable to a "duelling" situation but more for "Oh ****! I'm being attacked" situation.
Naihanchi Shodan & Nidan teaches many close, in-fighting applications.
Any thoughts?

Re: Kata for self defense
I think that Kata serve multiple purposes, they serve as a form of exercise, aa a methid of movement training, and integration of techniques, it is this integration of technique that helps with self defense.
Kata, are the integration of movement and techniques placed in a sequence, along with a directional sense. Within each of these movements are a series of techniques, some obvious some are more subtle, therein lies the beauty.
I really love kata because they give us a series of possibilities for defensive and offensive techniques and many techniques are a product of our intention or bunkai. A fight is a fluid situation, if the student pays attention to the bunkai of Kata, he will succeed in this dynamic environment.
All knowledge comes from the forms, but it is our insight and intention that makes us students and fighters.
