neko ashi dachi. Why practicing it?
Hello,
I'm a 20 year old white belt karateka. I started karate ****o-ryu courses 2 weeks ago, and my sensei teached us the neko ashi dachi. I feel like it useless to practicing, for it will never work in real combat. What's your opinion about it?
Thanks
Max

Re: neko ashi dachi. Why practicing it?
Hi maxberge,
I was taught Neko Ashi Dachi few years back and I thought it was a nifty move then. Apparently, it was the stance which you launch a snapping kick to the groin (less telegraphic due to the fast speed of the kick).
One thing I did learned and is still learning. It's not the styles or techniques that determine what will work but more so the individuals. Of course, some styles or techniques have a higher probability of working than others. That too, are dependent on many factors: is it a match or a real fight, fitness level, calmness, aggression and etc... and of course, skill of the fighters.
That being said, instead of asking, why not put it to a test with your fellow classmate? Ask him to hold a kicking shield and you try to kick it while he's moving and "defending". Decide for yourself... ;-)

Re: neko ashi dachi. Why practicing it?
Hey Max as a 20 year old starting out in your style you will find alot of the skills are unusual and seem useless. Usually you start off learning a move, once you have it to a usable level your instructor will show you what it is for. In a real fight you will find yourself in many different situations, and one day you might use Neko Ashi Dachi, without even thinking about it, if you train well it may be effective and save your life, that is why you learn it.
