How frequent should one train?
Am wondering, how frequent and how long (per session)should one train. Of course factors like time, physical condition etc needs to be taken into account, but what's the magic figure that will bring out the best result?
Any idea?

Re: How frequent should one train?
Hi Fong,
Personally, I like to train daily. But we all know that is NOT possible with our work and other personal commitments.
If you are learning just one type of MA, the min should be at least once a week, a longer break would result in poor retention and a steep learning curve...
Most schools recommend at least twice a week, min 2 hours per class.
I know of schools in Japan that offer you a black belt within 9 months if you train diligently for 6 days a week, with an average of 4 hours daily.
Most of all, it depends on your main objective of learning MA and what you hope to achieve within a given timeframe.

Re: How frequent should one train?
Hi there
currently i train 4 times a week. Each session is for 1 1/2 Hours. But this can change to maybe 5 - 6 depending on Club gradings or extra training for comps.
i think it depends on each person to how long or how may times a week you train.

That's good katokym, frequent training helps you to retain more techniques and become skillful in shorter time.

Re: How frequent should one train?
Hello Charles , an friends,I think everything all said had merit. But when we practice anything as an art , we must understand dedication , devotion. I hesitate to say this, but even fanatical devotion, should be considered. How are we expected to make our karate, rooted first, without years of learning an daily, or close to it? I understand limits, but karate is about overcoming our limits, overcoming obsticals. I realize also that 4 to8000 reps daily is alot. But this is only rational. Why? Because unless you understand truly, pressure points, and grabs an throws, an that area of your art, you will fail, against a real dangerous assailiant or more. This is why karate practitioners basicly fail time an again. Because they dont do the reps. an the intensity! An so this is truth , the majority of us needs this kind of daily hard training. A fight should not last more then acouple of seconds.Grappling is great but it is not the highest understanding in karate. I try to tell this story; about 1930 Japan judo champion challenged Okinawa karate ka to prove which art was superior. Okinawa sent a 75 year old master to Japan ... the bout lasted about 2 seconds. The judo champion was rushed to hospital with about broken collarbone , broken ribs an other bad injuries. The karate master left went back to Okinawa. What kind of training did the master do ? I believe it was extremely hard. An please understand the judoka was young an then judo was much more deadly then as done in the olympics today. Another thing I practice daily but the reps. are not over 400 aday. This is done with all my strength. I 46 years later can still break 4 one inch boards of pine or cedar with hands or feet.An no spacers, an one foot square. I only did the hard training for less then the first 5 years. I am now 60 years old. An never have I used karate to hurt anyone.Unless we develope truly our punches an kicks, we had better understand pressure points an grabs an throws! Thank you Charles, an friends, forgive the length of this message. Peace an great joy. Small krane

Re: How frequent should one train?
I think its best to train daily to keep fit and to get used to it.
i was in a pretty good form and then i went on a vacation to Greece. 2 weeks of lazyness and doing nothing.
When i came back it was hell. after my normal lesson i had musclepains all over.from that day on i skipp training only if i have a veeery serious reason.
